Has anybody seen any good recently released Asian movies?
Would you recommend them / it?
I've recently seen Kim Ki Duk's Time. It's a movie about a woman who tries to keep her boyfriend's interest in her by having her face changed. Good film. A bit creepy - scary along the lines of Old Boy.
Has anyone seen the Japanese film Takeshis'? |

Anyone know how good / bad the new film by the same director, Park Chan Wook is?
The title is I Am A Cyborg But That's Okay. I only read one small review about it. The reviewer said it's boring. |

I liked it. I'm really a big fan of his work so my opinion is biased of course.
It was definitely more light-hearted than his previous work...I mean, it's a love story not a tale about revenge.
It's got some twisted and quirky scenes and sometimes it felt like a Tim Burton flick.
not for everyone though... |

I don't care for Korean films; lack substance in my book. Kinda a chic equivalent of the vapid Hong Kong scene for the most part.
I'll take the older Chinese directors any day, although now some are pandering to Western audiences with the wushu craze in the West. Crouching Tiger, for instance, has been a commercial success but artistically it's Ang Lee's worst film.
Fat chance finding Chinese 4th or 5th generation films in video stores here (but you can find Korean contemporaries there). Chinese tend to be more eclectic in their celluloid tastes. |
