Hi all,

The new guy to replace us just started on Monday. We are on our way out after terrible experiences at the hagwon (you KNOW what I'm talking about!... if not please refer to Lesza and Catalina's posts on Job thread) He's a really cool guy and doesn't deserve what he's gonna eventually get. What advice should we give him? If he decides to leave the hagwon and try to find a better job in the very near future, what should he do to get out of his current E2, and not jeopardize his ability to stay working in Korea??

Thanks, Lesza

If he already has his visa and has started working, there is very little you can do for him. You can tell him what has happened if you want to, but I don't think that will help him now. (unless of course he decides to pull a midnight run)

If, on the other hand, he has not gotten his visa yet, he is still a free man and he is quite able to leave and find another job.

Anyway, I wish I could offer some real help, but sadly, there is not a lot of that for us in Korea.

Do keep trying to get your money, contact the labour board, efl-law and let him know that you will blacklist his school if he doesn't comply.

Good luck and I hope your next job is a much better experience for you.
Cheers

Chip in and buy him a ticket the hell out of there.

If you're feeling really nice, drive him to the airport and see him off.

Thanks for the tips! Especially BEckerson's.. tho I'm not feeling that rich nor generous today, but try me tomorrow!! And don't worry about my job situation... my next job is to lie on a beach... long enough for the bitter taste of Korea to leave my mouth. Back to the beach... anywhere, any time, in fact it doesn't even have to be a beach Smile

If the nu dude doesn't have his E2 yet, can he do a runner but still find work in Korea? He doesn't even have a copy of his contract yet.

if he doesn't have an E2 visa he isn't legally working here and as long as he hasn't signed the contract he can just take off. Nothing the boss can do.

As it appears the E2 visa process has not started yet the guy is in luck, provided he has bought a decent amount of cash with him. Get him some cheap accommodation and get him job searching.

Here are some previous posts about cheap accommodation:

Try a "study room".

They're called "Koshiwon".
Students rent them for studying in, and they sleep there, too. Tiny little rooms, shared showers, but usually clean and friendly.
Since you'll be surrounded by university students, you'll have no lack of people wanting to take you around and practice their english, once they realize that you're completely helpless. Nice kids, these korean uni students.
Just ask around in any university area. You might even be able to pick up some privates on a temporary basis while you're looking for a job.
I would expect to pay about 200,000 won a month for a teeny room. By the week, maybe 80,000.
Good luck.

Hi
I have a bunch of friends that live in Hae Bang Chon and pay between 500,000 - 700,000 won a month, no key money, for 20 - 30 pyoung places with 2 or 3 bedrooms.
Don't think that living in a hole will save you money. If you aren't comfortable in where you live, you'll always be going out, spending money. Living with your gf, you'll need a 2 bedroom in order to keep a healthy relationship. Trust me.

I stayed at the Dae Woo motel, right near the Plaza Hotel downtown, also near Seoul Station (subway) it was clean, safe, and the owner's son speaks English (call him Kim) you can get the directions including which bus to take (605 I believe) from the information desk at Incheon, they'll set everything up for you...you'll take a bus to the Plaza Hotel, and phone the motel from a public phone there, and they'll just trot over and pick you and your baggage up...it costs 35,000 won a night, room includes phone and cable TV...I spent a day or two sleeping off the jet lag and it was great...they're good people. Peace

Try the Dea Wha Motel at 20-17 E Tae Won Dong, Yong San Gu, phone 794 3364. Ask at the tourist information at Itaewon subway station where it is. Rooms are from 15000 to 17000 per night.

There's an ok place with plenty of room. 2 guys live there semi-permenently but they're cool. Free internet, use of kitchen and laundry. It's 13000/night and a little out of the way (near kyungbok palace). I think the web address is www.excitingkorea.com. Good luck!

You want to check out "homestay".
Go to the site: www.komestay.com
(yes, with a "k"). I used it and it worked very well for me. It was a great experience being shown around by a korean family, too.... they were nice to me.

Hi y'all

I am following up for Lesza here.

We chatted with the nu dude last night and it appears that the E-2 visa is a done deal - and I guess that that means he is here Crying or Very sad

Poor chap.

We will provide him with the contact info for EFL-Law, Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Public Prosecutors office, this site (but he will have to check it at a PC Bang because the hagwon dictator has blocked it from the school computers!!) and any other important info we can think of. We will help him do an autopsy of his s*it contract as soon as he gets a copy from the school Shocked

Plan to do all this after we drag the hagwon dictator through the Labour hearing on Monday.

Cheers,

Catalina
