There's actually an MS knowledge base on this issue as well. I helped someone fix this problem last year with it.

I would be using an MS troubleshoot before I ever attempted a third party one, like the one you used.

MS wanted $35.00 for Tech Support. HP gave it for free and they also gave me the website for the repair. *beep* MS, greedy bastards.

You didn't have to call them! All you had to do was know how to use google and then run a fix on your computer.

Shocked

What do you get when you google MS for support? You get their support center and they want $35.00 to answer an EMAIL!
What I'd like to know is where I could of gotten help for my problem directly from MS for free? If it's out there, there sure don't make it easy to find, whereas HP was so easy. Just logged on to their support center, asked a Tech my question and they got me the answer right there in their chat room. *beep* MS!

What you should have been looking for is the Knowlege Base in the support area, NOT live support. From there, you could have just done a simple search based on the error message logged in your admin tools and found your fix in no time. Some smart use of key words would also work.

Alternately, you could have just used system restore to fixed the problem. This is a known glitch in XP, one that I even have on occasion. Restoring my computer to one of my saved restore points always works.

I'm glad you found your solution, but the fact remains that you didn't have to use a third party or even pay to find it.
