Many times I have seen things that are whacked out here in Korea. Im sure you have too! Heck, its Korea! But, when I go to work, and I bring these stories up with my Korean co-workers, their reply, and im sure you have heard this "Its Korean Culture." Enough said, end of discussion.
Isn't that the biggest crock of sheet you have ever heard! In Canada, if some guy is doing something freaking stupid, we dont say "Look at old Johnny being Canadian again!" We say "Damn that guy is a loser and an a-hole! What an ass he is making of himself!"
Koreans need to come to terms with the fact that everywhere you go in this world, Korea included, we got winners and we got losers....

It might not be a good idea to talk about things that you think are "whacked out here in Korea" with your Korean co-workers.

my tip on this is...don't mention it *in* the workplace. Koreans at your job aren't really your friend unless you go out drinking with them. My two cents.

Off the top of my head, just the other night, two full grown men, outside a restaurant with other couples at about 11pm beating the snot out of each other in terms of should buddy cab it or not. And I mean a beating. How often you see that?
I have been here for 4 years and change, and with that i have seen some crazy things. Im sure many here can relate.
I'm on holidays now, but if I was at work, I would bring up how this couple only lasted a few days before he went Kimbo Slice on her. That is pretty crazy IMO. Thats who I am and what I would talk about around the water cooler, plus more. But you must understand, I talk about the good, the bad, as well as the crazy.

My point though, was that at home, we call em out, here the say its culture. Crazy stuff eh! Wink

Koreans act much differently toward each other than toward us, naturally.

If you were in your hometown and saw a homeless guy passed out in a shopping cart full of vodka bottles, you might remark to another local, "What a disgrace. This town is going to hell." But if a Korean showed up and said that, you'd probably get a little defensive. "Well yeah, but there are many programs and homeless shelters for guys like this."

Right for sure...spot on! But what I would not say is "This is Canadian culture." to the Korean dude. I would say that guy is wasted, too bad.

They admit the problems, but they won't to you. The problems are all over the Korean language media, but foreigners are not expected to know about them.

Can you imagine how much it would suck if I had to feel personally ashamed of every stupid thing Canadians do?

Haha. Funny thing is, certain factions of this board will try and make you do just that.

I don't understand people like that. This line of thinking is presented a lot here on Dave's, enough that I think some people would get defensive about their home country if a foreigner says something, but not defensive if a native says the same thing.

In college, I had a lot of friends in the "International Club". Sure, they had some gripes about the US. No one got defensive (well, I was the only US citizen). I would just nod and say I'm sorry things are that way (like people making fun of their accents).

Similarly, I've had a lot of real, down-to-earth conversations with black friends about the constant racism they experience in the US. Instead of being a moron and saying, "Oh, don't worry, we whites are working on it. We aren't all racist," I would, again, nod and express my regret that things are how they are. Maybe bring up some sociological points.

But the defensive thing I just cannot relate to.

It seems you are the one who doesn't realize it.
When you explain the situation as "whack" and then follow it with "Heck, its Korea! " , you are clearly associating "wacky" situation with "Korea", and not with an individual.

Koreans, of course, know that, as you have said, "everywhere you go in this world, Korea included, we got winners and we got losers...." and will agree 100% with that statement.

But when you pinpoint the problem as "wacky Korean problem" you are clearly, albeit unconsciously, putting down Whole Korea, and not the individual who happens to be Korean.
