I'm trying to lose weight these days and was at a bit of a stalemate before I started eating Jamji Jiggae or Kimchi Jiggae. Suddenly I lost a kilo or two in a week.

Anyone got advice about what I can eat in Korea to lose weight? Any of you got a diet plan that doesn't require my lazy butt to go to a big supermarket?

do some cardiovascular exercise a few times a week. if you can't handle it, walk for an hour (or two) a day. here in Seoul there are plenty of nice places to go for walks - lots of parks, trails, and small mountains - nothing really difficult.

Were you eating Jamji Jiggae for every meal, every day?

Diet is part but what kind of physical activity do you do? In Seoul, you walk a lot. Or at least I do. I walk 40 minutes every day to the subway and back. You're always up 'n' down subway stairs. I'm on my feet all the time teaching. On weekends I'm always hoofing it. I go for a jog twice a week. Walk and avoid short bus/taxi rides. Ansan must provide a lot of opportunity to walk.

They observe one difference between thin people and fat people is thin people are more active in everything they do. Even when at rest, thin people fidget etc.

I've found between the food in Korea and the massive increase in physical activity a big city demands, I can pretty much eat whatever I want and maintain a 32" waist. Which at age 40, for a North American male, I feel is pretty good.

For times of extreme eating excess, I'll lunch on a batch of rice and canned tuna.

Exercise Exercise Exercise.

I'm doing 60 minutes of cardio every other day and circuit weight training every other day.

Cut out sugar. I mean, really cut out sugar. Simply cutting out sugar will make an incredible difference.

Drink water and only water. Juice? Cut fruit juice in half with water. Milk? Skim milk.

I always loose weight when I eat Korean food - no fat in it. The problem is that I get hungry 2-3 hours later max, no matter how full I was when finished eating.

I also do not eat snacks/candy/soda/artificial fruit juice not by choice for dieting but I simply do not have any urge to buy that. I prefer concrete real meals.

It works. If exercise is added works very well.....but Very Happy

You need to diet and exercise. Basically find something you like to do but weight loss will not come (or will be very slow) without exercise.

I went through a pharse of exercising everyday and eating crap and of course the weight went on.. slowly but it went on gradually.

I watched this woman who lost about 10 stone on the tv today and she did it by exercise and eating her main meal in the morning and her cereal in the evning. She never felt hungry, she had loads of energy because her main meal was first thing in the morning and she burned more calories because she didn't go to bed on a full stomach!

Which makes perfect sense if you think about it!

They say not to eat after 6PM if loosing weight and when I did it it works. But the problem is that the only proper meal I can get in a day is the one when I come home in the evening. Morning wake up, shower go to work. Work, eat something for lunch in the only 1 restaurant in the area, go home, finally eat properly. This is what bugs me...

What the woman who lost 10 stone said (140lbs) is that if you eat your main meals in the morning ie meat/veg/pasta or patatoes and a sweet you are not going to be that hungry throughout the day. It is basically swapping the meals around so in the evening eat the cereal. You might think the idea is a bit 'off the wall' but I reckon it is worth a try!

I think thats another reason why diets don't work and thats because people stop eating what they like to eating things they hate. Then they jack in after a week blaming 'willpower' It isn't willpower but if you change what you eat throughout the day you will get more success.

So to clarify.

a) Eat your main meal in the morning and make it big. Your body burns off 2500 calories just by existing.

b) Exercise.

c) Eat 3 meals a day and 2 snacks and be patient.

You mean basically:

Wake up at 6AM. Shower, shave, prepare food. 7AM. Eat, put dishes back and only rinse them for smell. Dress, start going to work 8:20AM. If you need some resting time so you are not on the go watching every minute, wake up 5:30.

* Prepare food = since this is the only big proper meal, you can't eat bacon and eggs every day but you have to vary. So you either cook in the morning OR when you get home from work. To make a proper meal takes about 1-1.5 hours with preparation, cutting, etc. That means, when coming back from work its 8PM give or take. Start cooking 8:30PM. Finish about 10PM. Since you gotta wake up 5:30-6AM to start the day with food you can't "hang out" check email, post on Dave's Smile watch a 2 hour movie, etc. And then you gotta put time for grocery shopping in the equation shifting the "start cooking time" further. So basically, there is no life except the pressure to make a proper big meal for breakfast and getting up early enough to eat it.

All in all - your advice about eating a big meal in the morning is very good. Breakfast as a king, lunch as a prince and dinner as a poor man. But I do not see how it can be worked out in a regular person's schedule easily to be maintained for a fairly long time to loose weight.

Europe2Seoul, I don't understand what the difference is whether you eat it for breakfast or dinner, it is still 1.5 hours.

Oh yeah, when I said lazy butt I meant walking around LotteMart or taking the subway/bus out to whatever western supermarkets exist on the outer fringes of town.

I've been lifting weights 3 days a week and jogging 2. The thing is, if I lose 1kg jogging the next day my weight's came back with avengence at plus 1.2kg's! I just don't get it. I actually lose more weight on the weekend days where I do nothing!

I usually get a jamji kimbap first thing in the day. Later on I might have the tuna and veggies can from 711. I'll probably work out then. After that I'll get some jamji or kimchi jigae. Occasionally I get chicken on a stick instead of the tuna/veggies can, but not the deep fried kind. I usually sleep 1.5 to 2 hours after my last snack/meal.

Still, I can hardly lose weight. It's been almost a month at the gym now and I'm still hovering around the 86kg mark. I was 91kg's when I came back from traveling, but then I stopped drinking, so 5 slid off magically. Then I started working out and my weightloss stopped. I don't get it. Any comments on the above diet? And I do mostly drink water.

Well, a stew needs to simmer for a long time. Pasta sauce as well. Something roasting in the oven as well. I mean, I do other things during those 1-1.5 hours but still have to wait to start eating Very Happy

Maybe you have too much water in your body. Usually when people start dieting they loose much initally but its not fat - just water.
