Back in the States for the Holidays.. so many World Series Poker tournaments on TV all the time here. Just about everyone I know back home is really getting into it, buying the real good poker chips, playing all the time.
Anyone play Texas Hold 'Em in Las Vegas? I'll be out there for New Years Eve and for some time in January. Thinking of getting into a few games while there.

| I have played texas hold em in vegas a couple of times. I don't consider myself a good poker player but was able to make some money or not lose much and play for a long time just by playing very tight. I think poker is a good game because it gives you more time for your money, unlike games like blackjack or roulette where you can burn through your money in minutes. The casinos seemed to serve drinks to the poker rooms a bit more frequently than to other areas also. I played in nice and crappy casinos and could always find a game. The $1/$2 limit tables are the first to fill up obviously. Good luck! |

| I've played no limit hold 'em at the Luxor before. I'll tell you this, everyone enjoys being a bully; you had better have more than just $50 on the table when you buy in. |

Agreed. Poker is a good way to stretch out your money for a much longer time than other games. Also, depending on your table, there seems to be much higher potential for returns. I'm a terrible poker player, but last time I was in Vegas, I managed to pretty much break even after hours of playing. Poker players do get preferential treatment when it comes to drinks. But beware: drinks are free and plentiful everywhere in Vegas, which seems awesome in theory. Hell, you even get free drinks if you're on the floor playing penny slots. But it's very, very easy to lose track of just how much you are drinking when they're just being handed to you constantly, and if you're not careful you will end up with worshipping the porcelain god at the end of the night. |

I played in Ontario last night (visting parents in Michigan this week).
Played a $2/4 table.. started with C$85 and left with C$400. Very nice.
First time to play in a casino.. I always assumed I'd get eaten by sharks in those places. Surprised how many just normal regular people are playing.
Going out to Las Vegas for New Years for a week.. can't wait to get to those tables.
I was also surprised how long my money lasts playing poker over playing blackjack as well.
Are $3 rakes the norm in all casinos? |

I don't really know how to play -- but a friend (well, more of a neighbor) of mine recently won $12M at the World Series of Poker.
Sorry, I just have to throw that in anytime someone mentions poker since it's one of the few interesting things about my life...
...that and living a few houses away from Steve Guttenberg... who? Ah, nevermind. |

What kind of income do you make as a dealer in Vegas? Always been curious of that. |

Are you playing high or low limits?
Cash games or tournaments?
Fixed or No Limit?
Where are you staying?
Most casinos have low limit rooms now, both on the strip and downtown. Just play where ever you are staying, the different rake structures and bonus options (bad beat jackpots, special hand jackpots, draws) tend to work out even, so find somewhere you feel comfortable.
The Bellagio and the Wynn are best for mid and high limits. The Mirage is OK, but crowded and often full of rocks.
Shop around to find the best value tournaments and structures, they tend to change frequently.
The Venetian is a comfortable room with awesome chips and chairs.
The Monte Carlo is a good friendly low limit room.
The MGM always has games going, as does Binions.
Good luck. |

Mostly played low limit games. 2-4 limit.
Tried a NL game.. but a good way to lose all your chips real quick.
Tried most of the casinos.. Binions and Golden Nugget were my favorites. But most everywhere is more or less the same. The rake pretty much kills all the games.. a good $80 or so leaving the table per hour going directly to the casino. That is a big chunk when you are playing 2-4 tables.
Found that most games with 10 people.. there are always a good 3-4 people who will stay right through to the River.. so you really gotta have the best hand with Limit 2-4 games..
When I go back in February.. I'll focus more on Tournament play. |
