Tell them you love Kimchi.
Is this really advice?

However the fact that a foreigner would find it tasteful may have students thinking you actually appreciate the culture, but be warned it makes you pass gas.
Are you working on that assumption that the people working in Korea have been here more than 4 hours and have NEVER eaten kimchi?

learn some korean. best way to get in with your students for sure. it blurs the line between hangookin and waygookin - which is very important for students who dislike foreigners or students who are ignorant of such things.

it makes you much more approachable in class and out. instead of the students going to their korean teacher for advice and support they will instead come to you - which removes that horrible feeling you get when you've screamed at a class for 30 mins to be quiet and the korean teacher comes in and gets the result in 1 second.

of course, give the lessons in English at all times, but for anything not concerned with the lesson or the class as such, speaking or at least understanding korean will give you a major advantage with your students, be they kids or adults.

Hey, man! I LIKE kimchi and it doesn't give ME gas. I got in good with my KBF's parents after they saw me eat a ton of kimchi at our first dinner. It works with ALL Koreans... not just the kids.

Better if you combine it with some rice...in my experience, anyway.

Nah, I tell the truth and say I don't like kimchi. You'd be surprised at how many of your students don't like it too. If you REALLY want to get in good with elementary students, bring stickers (really good, North American style stickers) to class as a reward for good behavior or finished homework. Stickers are like magic. I had a 1st grade class whose behavior was deplorable. Then I started giving stickers as a reward for good behavior. Now they are little saints, doing everything in their power to obtain that sticker at the end of class. And they love me for it!
