Sorry if this is an old topic.

I'd like to hear from folks who are staying in Korea long term. 5+ years.

I am particularly interested in how they handle their increasing skill/experience as teachers in a job market that for the most part just wants hired hands.

I'm interested in hearing from people as well...

Does anyone think getting the MA and teaching at a university is a safe gig to work until you retire (mid 60's)?

Seems like universities are hiring just about anybody these days...

i teach at a university in korea. in the department for which i teach, every lecturer has an m.a. most here agree a university gig may not pay as much as an institute, but the hours are easier and the vacation time is much longer.

Some universities are as bad as hagwons.
Some universities never plan to hire any foreigner for long term.

Skarp, as a newbie to ESL teaching in Korea, it's natural that you're wondering about your longterm prospects. I did too nearly a year ago. I decided that the teacher-is-just-a-disposable-commodity attitude can serve me well in encouraging mobility. Not only do more opportunities for employment arise in such cases, but there's great chance to get around and live in different places.

To live under the illusion that you could live in the same Korean place for twenty-odd years is dangerous and unproductive. Don't settle down, just fit in and move around. Or rage against the gimchi makers. It's up to you. Gain experience nonetheless and you'll have opportunities coming out of the wazoo.

Good luck, whatever your longterm attitude.

I'm expecting to change jobs often and don't expect to stay in the same place for very long.

I'm not sure what my specific question is......

.....I suppose I want advice/suggestions for managing the transition from job to job.

Is it best for instance to finish each contract before moving on to the next one?

Is it easy to go back into hakwans after time in a University? Do schools set much store by references?

Is it worth keeping up with preofessional development?

These are issues short-stayers don't need to consider of course.

Thanks

Skarp

Well the pastor at my church has lived her for 22 years and I think that he has a very succussful life and fits in very well. I've lived here for 6+ and plan on staying for another 3-5 years.

To survive in Korea, you need to have friends, both Korean and expat. Preferably expats who are going to stay more than 12 months. You also need to know how to accept some of the crap that goes on in this country.

I said this way back in January I think

"know whats important, what to like, what to hate, and how to ignore the rest" - not an exact quote but something like that.
