In the same vein as Qinella's weekly MP3 offerings, I'm gonna give some gems from my collection and try to make it a fairly regular thing. The following are all awesome and I suspect many of you have never heard them.

10cc - 'Dreadlock holiday' (1978): http://fileanchor.com/86385-d

This is a story about a trip to Jamaica.

Depeche Mode - 'I feel loved' (2001): http://fileanchor.com/86128-d

Nightclubby fare.

Senor Coconut - 'Showroom Dummies': http://fileanchor.com/86127-d

A cover of German techno gods Kraftwerk's 1977 track.

Midnight Oil - 'Blue sky mine': http://fileanchor.com/86124-d

These Aussie rockers had a one-hit-wonder with 'Beds are burning' in the 80s. They've done several other good tracks and this is one of them.

The Open Mind - 'Magic Potion': http://fileanchor.com/86386-d

Comically blatant LSD song from 1966. Awesome, heavy guitars.

Delacey - 'Hideaway': http://fileanchor.com/86287-d

Dance/pop track from the 90s. Very good track with stunning beat and atmospheric keys.

Tomorrow - 'My White bicycle': http://fileanchor.com/86134-d

A crazy 60s acid-noise - essential for any fan of the era. Hard rockin' and melodic.

The Ruts - 'Babylon's burning': http://fileanchor.com/86130-d

Strong candidate for best punk song ever. From the late 70s....the guitars are mind-blowing! Listen to those RIFFS! Shocked

Type O Negative - 'Be my druidess': http://fileanchor.com/86129-d

Long my favorite band, this song is what would happen if Black Sabbath, U2 and Sisters of Mercy got together, smoked weed and plugged in. Although usually heavier than this, and with much longer songs, Type O weld metal with melody better than any other group I've heard attempting the same. Also, Type O, unlike most metal, have a substantial female following.....so ladies otherwise averse to metal should give it a try.

Opinions welcome.

A couple good selections there, Spinoza. I love Senor Coconut.

Here are some of my own additions if you will.

A reggae love song from 1969. This is a good example of the skinhead reggae sound.
http://www.daehanmindecline.com/WinstonShand-matilda.mp3

Nazi jazz music produced by the Nazis as propaganda. The Germans were forbidden to listen to jazz, but it was broadcast to the Allies to discourage them.
http://www.daehanmindecline.com/charlieorchestra-byebyeblackbird.mp3

A weird calypso song filled with innuendo.
http://www.daehanmindecline.com/baldhead_growler-sausage.mp3

One of my favourite Slackers songs. They're coming to Korea in March.
http://www.daehanmindecline.com/transfer/slackers-rude_and_reckless.mp3
The Slackers covering Max Romeo.
http://www.daehanmindecline.com/transfer/Slackers-ChaseTheDevil(Live).mp3

Korea's top skinhead band, Captain Bootbois. If you like punk you'll love this rock opera of a song.
http://www.daehanmindecline.com/transfer/CaptainBootbois-WayofLife.mp3

A more emotional song from Rux, the top punk band in the country.
http://www.daehanmindecline.com/transfer/Rux-StandMyGround.mp3

Here's one by Suck Stuff, one of the more active punk bands in Korea. I'm singing in the chorus on this one.
http://www.daehanmindecline.com/transfer/SuckStuff-DaysofYouth.mp3

Johnny Lee, a Korean rockabilly singer from the '60s before the government cracked down on music performers.

This link won't work.

Good stuff RT. I enjoyed the first two (and 'Chase the devil' of course - a classic) especially. Didn't quite get the punk stuff, mind.

That was refreshing. This was obviously recorded off an old vinyl LP, one that seems to be slightly warped because the sound is oscillating.

It was recorded by a guy from the band MR27. If you nose around this site

http://blog.naver.com/kurt0181/20019672477

you can find all sorts of stuff from back then.

Korea's music scene had a lot of potential in the '60s. Park Junghee destroyed it in order to maintain power, but if he didn't then Korea would've been a musical force equal to Japan today.

Actually, there was still a lot of good music in the 70's and 80's, too. I think what really diminished the real musicians chances of getting some airplay was the record companies who figured out that they could increase their share of the profits in the late 80's and early 90's by switching their attention to pop singers and boybands.

I knew a guy who wrote a lot of the famous student protest songs in the late 70's and early 80's under a pseudonym. He also wrote and played for some of the most popular rock musicians in the 80's. Amazing musician and he had one of the best singing voices I've ever heard (think a slightly subdued Joe Kocker (the real spelling is censored!!!)). He could talk for hours on end about American, British, and Korean folk and rock music.

Thanks for the link, by the way. More proof of what I've always felt about Korean music: there were and are some world class musicians in Korea...Problem is, you just wouldn't know it by watching TV and listening to the radio.

This song is so Serge Gainsbourg-like. 김추자...잊어야 한다면

Make sure you check out all the entries on there. He's got a ton of stuff, including Korean '60s R&B, Shin Joonghyun and all sorts of psychedelic stuff.

Okay, yeah, I found the other entries. I was only looking on the right of the screen.

Some pretty nice songs. I wished more music like this played on the radio. Whenever I tune it, it's always seems to be some boring talkshows or classical music.

Some of the songs are covers.

For example, this one sounds familiar...
배인숙...누구라도 그러하듯이

Isn't it a Serge Gainsbourg song?

Yeah. I've met great Korean musicians here and there but the pop scene in Korea is so absolute. Alternative musicians don't get a look in except for some young punks now and then. It's a shame. Korea has it's 60's and 70's musicians but they are seen as timepieces here. Very unfashionable. They aren't relevent in todays pop culture.
