I'm looking for a nice island or beach on the West Sea/Yellow Sea/the big body of water west of Korea and east of China for a weekend getaway. I'd prefer something in the Choongnam area(like around Taean Haean), but I'm also willing to go up to Incheon. I've found a couple of islands on the internet, like Deokjeok Island(that one sounded the best so far), and Taean Haean is probably a rockin' national park, but I'm not looking for anything, really, except a nice beach.

Any insider info?

Sapsido (you can get there via ferry from Daechon, Chungchongnam-do) is great. Really small, you can walk around it in about an hour. A great place for camping.

The islands in Taean Haean are pretty nice too, but their proximity to Seoul/Inchon means they absolutely heave with people at the weekends. Same goes with islands off Inchon, but Deokjokdo is just far enough away to deter daytrippers.

A better island off Incheon is Baekryongdo (sp?), the one closest to North Korea. There's a huge, wide beach there, great seafood and the boat tour around the island is a must. You have to register your passport details when you book the tickets (they were about 50-60000 won when I went). I heard a rumor foreigners weren't allowed there anymore, but I'd check that out for yourself.

actually, i've been to the west sea area many times. the boryoung area is very nice. it's where dae-chun beach is. dea-chun beach has a somewhat poor reputation but i actually like it. it's a big beach and has a lot of cheap and expensive motels, hotels just off the beach. it's often a little crowded but still can be very fun. it you're going with a korean girl, she'll love it. although koreans bad mouth the beach sometimes, they flock there like flies on a watermelon during summer holidays.

from dae-chun beach, there are many fairy and boat tours of the small islands just off the west coast. that could be a very pleasure one day experience.

wando is about the best island to stay over night. around wando there are many really nice little island where you can expect to meet up with small island lifestyles and forms of entertainment. anyway, if you do go you'll probably have a good time. Cool

I went to Bogildo which is about 1 hour ferry ride from wando and it was gorgoues. the people there were so friendly(I don't think they had seen a waygook before), the water was clean and there are some unreal hikes up through the island. It is pretty good place to chill out.
Be warned however that there is only 1 yeogwan on the island so i hope you like sleeping on the floor. I would go back again. I met more friendly locals in 4 days than i do in 4 months were I live. Speaking Korean is definantly a help as well. Very Happy

DeokJeok Island (덕적도) is a good choice. I've been to a few of the Yellow Sea Islands off the coast of Incheon, and DeokJeok is my favorite one.

If you go there, there are two main beaches, SeoPoRi (서포리) Beach is the more popular one, but a little further up the road is BatJiReum (밭지름) Beach is by far the nicer one, and it's much less crowded. It's also right next to a nice little hiking trail. BatJiReum is the place to be during the day.

SeoPoRi beach has a lot of restaurants, some bars, and lots of places to buy firecrackers. It's the place to be at night.

Have fun!

If you are prepared to travel to Joella province then the island of Bogildo is very nice. There are also many islands around that region. The ferry terminals at Mokpo and Wando provide frequent daily links between all of the islands(Inexpensive and the islands are close by). Once on the island there is plenty of "minbak" (family lodgings) accomodation available. Especially as this is not considered peak season. It was very relaxing even for a hyper tense individual such as myself!

spent last week on eochong island, ferry ride about 2hours from Gunsan. Very nice, scenic & different, shame about the weather, no beaches to speak of though.

Hongdo is THE west coast island for Korean tourists. It's a 3-hour ferry ride west of Mokpo and on my trip in July I was the only foreigner in sight. It's the westernmost inhabited island in Korea and has incredible cliffs and caves that make the tours around the island breathtaking. The inexpensive (and busy) tour boats go into caves, close to cliffs and stop at smaller isles for you to walk around. A fishing boat pulled alongside, and a couple of men proceeded to prepare some fresh fish for an impromptu meal, for 25,000 won a plate. That was a much more expensive option than the many cheap and tasty restaurants along the beach and in the small town. The trip was ideally paced to fit a schedule of 8 a.m. from Mokpo to 8 p.m. back in port. I hear you could add a night's stay on other nearby islands. That could fit with your idea of a weekend getaway.

Yes, I've been to most of those.

YongJongDo is just another name for half of the island that the airport is on. It does have a beach, called EulWangNi/ո Beach. The best thing about this beach is that getting there is as easy as catching a bus from the airport. It's crowded, though, and the water isn't very clean. It's better than a sharp stick in your eye, and it's an OK day trip, but not exactly worth planning a weekend around.

Wolmido isn't really an island anymore, it's been attached to mainland Incheon by land reclamation. There are a bunch of expensive sashimi restaurants, a crappy amusement park, and not much else. There's also a ferry port with regular ferries to the above mentioned YongJongDo. I'm pretty sure there aren't any beaches there. Skip it.

Muido is nice, and it's also convenient. Catch a bus to the airport, a 15 minute bus from the airport to the ferry port, and a 15 minute ferry to the island. HaNaGae/ϳ Beach is the nicer of the two beaches on this island. It's 4 km from the ferry port, so it's a pretty reasonable walk, or you can catch the island bus. The closer beach, SilMi/ǹ Beach (one km from the ferry port) isn't quite as nice, but at low tide you can walk across the mudflats to another uninhabited island with what looked like nice beaches. I was not up to tromping through that much mud to get there. There are two mountains to hike on the island, but I didn't hike them.

I'm pretty sure what you're calling TokJokDo is what I called DeokJeok Island () in my previous post. This is definitely the best of the ones I've been to, but it's also the furthest. One hour and ten minutes by high speed foot ferry (W33,000 round trip), over two hours on the slower ferry that allows cars and other vehicles. Sandy beaches, clean water, it's what you're probably looking for when you want to go to a beach but can't go to Thailand.

Sorry, I can't help you with Chakyakdo or Yonghungdo

There is only one annoyance about all of the beaches that I've been to on the Yellow Sea: lifeguards. They way they act, you'd think that Koreans can't swim. Every time I went into water that was up to my shoulders or higher they yelled at me over the loudspeaker, set off sirens, and sent people out in boats telling me to come back in. If you can find a place to swim without them around, I'd recommend it.

It's still a nice getaway from Seoul.

Well the island was inhabited for a while as we all now know after watching Silmido! I had a little trip to Muido on election day: followed some more specific directions Son Deureo posted on another thread - bus number 222, 301 or 306 from stop 9A at Incheon airport and then take the ferry. Some pleasant unspoilt scenery if you walk up and over the hill 'guk-sa-bong' and down to Hanagae beach on the other side.

My wife and I went to Deok-Jeok do last Monday (a week ago). It was very quiet and relaxing. The first restaurant up from the first dock (more than one in the summer time) has an aewsome seefood rest. We had Pajo(seafood pancake and really enjoyed it).

I took a few photos of a sunset. Lots of trees. Hear it really gets busy during the summer time. Check it out while it's still mellow, you won't regret it.

BTW, you can catch a bus at Seoul Station Subway station in front of the police station (THE ONE THAT IS ON THE SAME SIDE OF THE STREET AS SS.) It goes all the way to the warf.

Go to Myeongsashimni off wando. 4km of pure beach. It's a nice place to go. That other beach beginning with a B in the thread earlier near by this beach say that it has unrivaled surfing. Like hell it does. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes
