Hi.

I am applying for my Masters degree in film at the National Film and television school in London.

I need to make a couple of short films for my application. I have some from uni but I don't feel they're up to scratch to be honest...

Now in Korea, it's pretty hard to get people together for making some films.

And I'm sitting at home thinking "hmm, well I have ideas for full lenght films and maybe some adaptations (would like to make a short movie based on Poe's 'the tale tale heart' with the theme being Sartre's 'Hell is other people...) but I'm cr@p at writing short movies, wouldn't it be cool if I could find someone who has written some cool ideas and would like to use their spare time to get them on tape/dvd...?

Is that you...? Do you have the ideas and are thinking 'Yeah it would be kinda cool to see them come to life on a screen...'

Maybe you're a burgeoning cinematographer with a dvd camera sitting at home that you'd like to put to use...?

Do you act, or would you love to try...?

So yeah, basically I would love to hear from people who would be interested in getting together, say saturdays or sundays in Seoul or thereabouts and throwing some ideas about, putting a working script / screenplay together and then getting down to filming something. Could be a mood piece, music video, mini documentary... or all the above.

Better than lying in bed hungover or sitting in a pc room and hey - I think it could be FUN!

So yeah, if you're interested, pm me or reply to this thread and when there's a few people interested, we can swap contact details and I'll try to arrange an initial meeting... hey, maybe we could form a small production co...?

Any groups allready out there doing this, hey - give me a shout would you...? -I'd love to join in.

About me - Studied Drama, Theatre and Television studies at Uni in Winchester. Experience making amatuer documentaries and have acted in a British TV Movie (goodbye mr chips) and done a littel amatuer theatre, but directing is my main direction. Love cinema and it turns me on basically. Have a couple of ideas that I would like help with developing.

So give me a shout...! Cool

Okay, I've had about five PM's so far, so that's pretty cool.

I'll email you guys back later today and try and see if I can get us all agreed on a time / place to met some time in the near future to discuss ideas... or I can get your email addresses and we can chat / cc email before meeting or something...

Okay back to work now, but will be replying in a couple of hours to your messages....

I've tried several, several times to do this in Seoul- and to this day I have made no films in Korea. The biggest killers are:
Time- no one REALLY wants to commit to what it takes
Location- try to find a good filming location...now find one that isn't filled with people blocking your shot
Police- Though not illegal, anytime your walking around with a camera, or doing odd things it kinda draws the 5-0
Cost- The big one. It is a bit expensive to get props, makeup, lights, sound, or any of that jazz here

Should you decide to go on anyway, google filmfights .

Location - no problem. All you need is an apt, a park, a public place, a river... plus i have a mate with his own bar in ilsan... Cool

Police. Not many round here.

Cost - no prob. we go guerilla style.

Time is the only potential obstacle I can see.

I don't think you get me on cost, I'm not talking 'bout permits, mate, I'm talking 'bout equipment. Yes, you go guerilla, but even guerillas need lighting and sound. Anyway, if you want some help, I'm in- if just to see something actually get done here.

Not trying to be inflamaotry - but who says you even need sound for a short movie...?

Plus I've seen shorts made on a dvd camera without anything other than natural available light.

Okay, might look more polished with lighting and pro sound, but the main aim is still to tell an interesting story through images. They might not be winning prizes at festivals, but still, it's good practice and fun.

Editing is of course an issue, but I believe editing packages you can use on your pc are pretty good these days, if not up to say avid standard...

Well, I flaked yesterday and never emailed anyone back, but will do it today / tonight...My proposal is to meet on a sunday, possibly the 21st if it can be arranged in time... if not after that...

Anyway, thanks for contacting me those who have so far, I WILL write you all back soon, have camp today and part time eve work, so might be late...

Cool

Hi.

An update.

It seems a few of you are cool with meeting on Sundays a couple of you have said yes to the 21st.

Will write you all back later today....

Just like to point out that equipment is going to be little to none, by the sounds of things, maybe we'll end up shooting just with a camera and little else. This wont put me off though, I promise, as have seen okay results with this before. The most important thing to me is using images to tell an interesting story, create a mood.

And to enjoy the proccess...!

A couple of people already have some ideas to put forward and a couple of you have a camera and experience with shooting / editing and other production skills, so that's cool.

A couple of people have said they don't have much experience acting, but would like to try... I'd definately like to like to point out that lack of experience is NO reason not to try it out.

Some classic films have been made using untrained actors, so it's no biggie to me... anyway, we're not going to be trying to make eight and a half just yet....

I think if it gets going we could call ourselves 'Seoul Films.' Just an idea, and maybe jumping the gun, but hey...

Okay, Everyone who's contacted me and responded to this message - thanks for your interest and enthusiasm, the latter is definately one of the most important things you can bring along when we meet up!!!

I'll Pm you all later today...

Ciao for now...

Cool

Okay we're going to go for Wolfhound pub in Itaewon on Sunday the 21st for first meeting.

I guess not everyone will know where it is, so we can met outside Burger King at 1.30pm and take it from there.

Things to bring along would be - a notebook and pen; any ideas you have; any scripts you may have completed; a poem or short story you'd like to suggest we adapt, so you can read it, or we can all read it. And of course an open mind...

Okay, I'm knackered, so that's all I can think of for now, but will PM everyone tommorow.

Ciao for now

Cool

I'm a member of ifckc.org but being in Korea I can't go to the meetings. Making films is hard but it can be done. The ifckc is the most active filmmaking group in the country and it wouldn't be hard to make the same sort of thing in Korea. -Jeff

I don't know. If you're filming anything that might put Korea in a bad light, don't be surprised if this country that's supposedly been a democracy for almost two decades looks a bit undemocratic all of a sudden.

That said, a wonderful idea for a short film would be a day in the life of a typical hogwan. You could have the foreigners stumbling in still drunk from the night before, the Bible-reading, shit-hot KTs trying to invite them to church, the boss calling a last-minute meeting to contradict what he said in the last meeting, the kids swearing at the foreigners in Korean and throwing things at them, the teaching of a ridiculous crap curriculum, everyone filling out BS report cards at the end of the day - the whole nine yards. Who knows - maybe Koreans would even want to watch it.
