Possibly going in late May, so I thought I'd start planning a trip now..

All I know about the place is Ulan Bator (that's how it's spelled on the map I'm looking at now anyways) and horse riding across the desert..

ANY recommendation would be appreciated.. it won't be a long trip, 2 weeks maximum, but I want to make the most out of it..

Thanks in advance.

Usually to get around Mongolia, you join up with a group of likeminded backpackers. I was there last Summer and went to the Terelj National Park and the Gobi Desert. The best guesthouse for organizing tours (groups of likeminded backpackers) was UB Guesthouse. It is run by Koreans, and has many Koreans there. I wouldn't stay there, but meet others there. They can put you in a 2 day trip to the Terelj national park with horse riding. Or they book 5, 6, and 7 day Gobi tours. Be selective riding horses on the Gobi tour, some places have horses so bad it is much easier to walk. If you are looking for a multi-day horse riding trek, those do exist, but not sure how to hook up.
Of course, check lonely planet thorntree for the best information forum.

I wanna ride motorcycles there. I think horses are bad for multiday rides. I think they are bad for multihour rides or even multiminute rides in some cases.

Two weeks isn't much. It's such a vast country that to really enjoy it you need to spend a lot of time...as of course because of the poor infrastructure much of your travel will be done in dodgy jeeps and on horseback.

Two weeks might give you the chance for a few days in the Gobi Desert and a few days somewhere else (perhaps Lake Huvsgul? or the ancient capital Kharakhorum).

Also be very very careful in Mongolia - wild exciting and generally very hospital people - but many lawless bandits. I met with many travellers who had been robbed, or whose minibuses had even been highjacked at gunpoint/knifepoint. My Israeli companions joked that they'd feel safer walking around Gaza than Ulaan Bataar's highstreet. The party I travelled in with (mostly hardened Israeli travellers not long out the military) got robbed on the train as they were trying to get off. I'd long since learnt how to hide my valuables on my person, so despite much heavy groping (I'm not kidding) I got off scot free.

If you're a girl be careful - I got grabbed from behind walking along the mainstreet of the capital, but kicked until I was free. Other girls reported similar occurances. Watch yourself - always be vigilante. Also if you are quite busty and ride a horse, the Mongolian men will ride up beside you and watch your bosom bounce up and down (might be a good idea to wear a tight jacket). Confused Be sure you ride with at least a couple of strong looking men.

But Enjoy! ~ It's the country I most dream of visiting again!

there's a "city" somewhere in the south (i say "city" due to the dirt roads and ramshackle housing and no plumbing) where i hung out one morning due to the jeep we were in breaking down.

i saw this girl walking around in a black minidress with a white apron over it. 2-3 inch black heels and sheer black stockings. even had a little white hat thing.
i thought wtf, theres a sexy french maid walking around, then i saw another one, and another one, then a group of 6 walked around the corner.
my jaw hit the dirt and drool was making a mud pool.
so i asked the guide, "whats with all these sexy french maids walking around?"
"oh, thats school uniform."
the man who decided that (it had to be a man) is a genius

Geez. If you got grabbed from behind that's pretty brazen. Do they rob locals as well or just the foreigners?

About carrying the money on your body, did you carry travellers' cheques or did you just have cash with you? I don't have any credit cards so that's all I'll be bringing.

I don't think finding male companions will be difficult but I'd like to be as independant as possible. This won't stop me from going there but are there emergency resources for women at Ulan Bataar?

Thanx

Mongolians do look across the border and envy the law and order in China. It can be a pretty lawless country. However, there are many travellers who manage to come away unscathed (including moi).

Forget credit cards. You are going to Mongolia! Travellers checks will probably only be useful to you in the capital Ulaan Bataar (though you better check if you can even use them there, as it is several years since I visited and I don't remember). You'll need hard cash when you travel out of there (travellers cheques will be useless). You ought to split it up, and carry it (wrapped up in plastic to waterproof it) in several different locations. I carried the bulk of it around my waist in a money belt under my clothes. I then had some strapped under my clothes around my shoulder. I then had a decoy money belt (with just a little cash) over my clothes. I kept a couple of hundred dollars in my backpack.

As for women's emergency resources - I'm not sure what you mean.

If you are a young white woman, you will be considered very exotic to the Mongolian men, so be prepared for a lot of attention! They do this gesture with their thumbs and fingers (which I didn't understand at first until some Mongolian women explained to me) which means they like your body. I had thought it meant something about my horse the first dozen times I encountered it!

If you ride a horse, be very careful to wear appropriate footwear. So many tourists wear unsuitable shoes that will not release you from the stirrups if you fall off your horse, and you may be dragged and injured. I came off my horse 3 times, but always got up unscathed (thankfully). In Ulaan Bataar they sell riding shoes at the big market there. Also, try to get protective headgear (I can't remember if they sold that at the market). If you are injured riding a horse, you may be 100s of kms from a hospital, and you will have to make the trip in a jeep that travels crosscountry (there are no highways, and few proper roads) and it may be something like 48 hours before you get medical attention, with only vodka to kill your pain. I have seen this when I travelled by jeep from the North. A Mongolian man had a broken leg, and the ride was extremely bumpy (no roads for most of the trip). He would cry with pain, until he was in so much agony the driver would stop the jeep, and we'd take him outside and pour vodka down his throat until he was totally drunk, and we'd start off again.
