I just had my very first phone interview with the director.. I was asked all sorts of Qs including my religion!! is this normal?
I didn't get to ask any questions which I had prepared to... because he gave me no chance to ask any Qs! and is this normal?
I was asked of my GPA... which I'm not very proud of...

It's pretty normal, don't sweat it. Questions that Westerners would consider rude and invasive are standard among Koreans, it's all part of slotting you into the hierarchy and figuring out how harmoniously you'd 'fit in'.

As a side note, lying and face-saving are part of the culture. So in regards to your not-so-great GPA, just fabricate it. It's what a Korean would do. You will be bombarded with lies and half-truths as soon as you touch down at Incheon airport (all in the name of saving face and keeping harmony), best get into the mindset now Wink

That's normal. Do you drink? Smoke? Go to church on Sunday? Normal. Don't be decieved though; many so-called Christians really aren't; they're devils ready to screw you at the first opportunity, so do your homework. Maybe you got asked for your GPA because the director wants to tell the parents he's hiring a straight-A student. That you don't doesn't mean you won't get the job.

Welcome to Korea!

As simpleminds said, they don't really care about your grades. They just want to sell you to Korean Mother's as a 'berry berry suhmahtuh teechuh' ('very very smart teacher', you'll get used to atrocious Konglish pronunciation after a while).

Seriously, I'm assuming you're applying for a Hagwon job? Then all that truly matters is your white face and your North American accent (if you don't have a NA accent, then start practicing one now... I'm a New Zealander and I've pretty much got my California drawl down pat Wink). Get ready for life in a country where Political Correctness simply doesn't exist.

He may want sealed transcripts to present them to immigration to process your visa. If thats the case then he will never see them.

Even if they are for him, your transcript will probably appear too complicated for him to read anyways.

Exactly! Most Hagwon bosses can't actually handle reading more than one or two sentences of English at a sitting.

Ditto the sealed transcripts. Don't worry about your actual qualifications. Right now you should getting to the gym and taking care of your skin and hair. The most important thing at a Hagwon is being handsome/beautiful.

Absolutely. The first thing my director said when he picked me up at the bus station was "Oh, I saw your picture on your resume, and I think you are very handsome teacher, so I hire you right away."
Experience and qualifications don't mean squat to a hagwon director. I'm a tall white boy from California --- that's all that mattered.

Even if he doesn't it's no big deal. Move onto the next one.

Right on! This is what I have been saying all this time.

If you're white and looks good, they want you regardless of your GPA as long as you have some sort of BA/S.

Your looks is more important than your abilities/skills and experience in Korea.

I had four schools chasing after me after looking at my picture. They weren't interested in my qualification at all and didn't ask me anything I had in my resume. Only thing they wanted to know was when I can start.
