Rhino,

I would charge here..... http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/

Invaluable resource site for writing especially for adults. I also on my teaching site, have some writing starters. I often also change a reading exercise into a writing exercise, dictate and write . Or listen to a story and write. But I don't do a lot of this type of rote stuff.

Check out the grammar oriented powerpoints on my site also, you'll have to scroll the powerpoint section.

I use "Writing Matters" for my freshman Eng comp class.
It gets the job done.

Take a look if you can find it:

You don't mention if it is creative or academic or exam paper writing that you are going to teach.

For academic writing:

I used this one, 'Writing Academic English' by Oshima and Hogue:

http://www.bestwebbuys.com/Writing_Academic_English-ISBN_0201340542.html?isrc=b-search

I found it kind of covered what I wanted with an advanced level writing class, although I ended up extracting bits out of it and making up my own text book from a selection of materials. It took about 2 weeks to make, but it's worth it if you have a lot of such writing classes.

OP: I don't make a habit of jumping on people for poor grammar...but in certain cases, I do. If you're going to be teaching writing, I think you'd better brush up on your own. I KNOW that this is "only" a teacher's forum, but if you can't do it for us, CAN you do it for your students?

Yeah, I know in texting and short writing that this is "cool", but "I" is always capitalized.

If you can't bother to get a dictionary, at least look up words on-line!! There are so many dictionary websites to choose from!

No, you mean "their". There is also "they're" which means "they are". Try to get these straight.

You need to know where to put periods (or full stops if you're from the UK) in your sentences.

Sorry to come down on you like this, but your students are going to ask you a LOT of grammar questions, and it would be better if your writing reflected your knowledge!

You sound like the person my school refused to hire. They asked him how he taught writing classes (after he had bragged that they were what he was best at) and he said he made the students edit over and over again. My boss's response was, "well, couldn't you have bothered to edit your own resume?"

I know this is 'just' a forum, and I know that people can be out of line in pointing out typos (though most of yours, of which ajuma only pointed out a few, weren't typos they were mistakes). However, if you are asking for advice on teaching writing, the best advice is to make sure you can do it yourself, which a lot of graduates of our current watered-down universities (colleges if you're American) are incapable of doing, despite the fact that they have a piece of paper telling others that they really are smart. cheers lover.asian thanks for the referral it seems to be a really useful site. Much appreciated and thanks for the non-negative comments. Ajumma, sounds like you need a ride. Why George Bush? You sound like the red neck texan with the Mr. superiority attitude. For me i'm a humble Brit who thinks Bush or Bushe is the no.1 terrorist. BUT nonetheless cheers for your wit and humour whilst i'm sitting here doing a wee bit of admin before i head off shortly for my three o'clock finish or finishe.

Take care all and have a nice weekend. Any more referrals for resource sites will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers the Charge.
