Is this normal? My contract has me working for the principal of the school and it says he can designate any workplace he chooses?

Is this a normal contract for a public school job?

Something doesn't seem right about this.

I will post the parts of the contract that I find questionable. I do not want to start a fuss, I just want to know if this is a normal public school contract.

Article 7 (Work Place)
① Employee shall work at a Work Place as designated by Employer, and the Work Place may be a school, Office of Education, training center, or any other educational institute located in XXXXXXXXXXX city.
② Employer may designate multiple Work Places for Employee.
③ Employer may designate Employee to work at a Office of Education, training center or other educational institute while school is in recess with the exception of Employees paid vacations. In this case, Employee shall not claim for any additional pay.
④ In case Employee wants, Employee can work at educational institutes designated by XXXXXXXXXXX city during his/her paid vacation under his/her Employers approval and get additional pay.

Confused

② The Work Hours of Employee shall be eight(Cool hours a day(including lunch hour), total 40hours(including work hours of additional school) per week and actual class instruction hours of Employee shall not exceed 25hours(including actual class instruction hours of secondary school) per week. If, however, Employee's actual class instruction hours exceed 25hours per week, Employee shall be entitled to extra pay at the rate applicable to Korean teachers extra pay.
③ Employee shall follow the normal Work Hours of the Korean Teachers. However, Employer can adjust Work Hours as he/she deems appropriate.
④ Employer may require Employee to work overtime in addition to normal Work Days and Work Hours. In this case, overtime pay will be provided.
Confused

So according to this, he can require that I work at his brothers kiddie hagwan if he wants? and he can "require me to work overtime"?

Confused

I'm not liking the sound of this so far.

It's pretty much the standard public school contract. Twenty-five hours is higher than most others, but still okay. Overtime in a public school is not mandatory. More than likely, you may be asked to do summer/winter classes as part of your 25 hours when you aren't on vacation time. Working at other locations -- means other schools within the district or an after-school program.

I am looking at one that was sent to me.
Has anyone ever been able to make changes to EPIK contract before signing it?

Has anyone had any major problems from signing the standard epik contract?

That is almost identical to the one I signed. Is it a a country school? I work at two country schools.

My contract is with the principal of my main school. The same clauses are in it. Except mine says nothing about institutes, and nothing about being required to work overtime, it explicitly states I can agree to overtime if I want. I never get any though. My contract is for 25 'hours' but a class hour means 25 classes of 40 minutes each.

They can be flexible. I'm not at school for eight hours a day.

Good luck with it.

You might want to change the required overtime to optional and find out what the Korean teacher overtime rate is (5000won?)

It's not exactly a country school, but it's not in a large city either.

Anyway, thanks for the responses.

There seems to be allot of contractual language such as, "The employer may designate." Regardless, you still need permission to work outside the place of employment. I've always advocated for, "The employee may work outside the place of employment once the employee has received permission from Korean Immigration Officials and written authorization from the employer" to be written in labor contracts. You need permission from them anyway, so why shouldn't it be clearly stated in this labor contract.

Overtime issue: Your employer can extend your working hours (extended works) and is required to pay additional remuneration per hour. You x your hourly wage by 1.5 and that's how much your employer is required to pay you in accordance with Korean Labor Laws.
