Urban Myth, There already is a new rule Mokdong immigration has about not accepting letters of release until you've completed 10 months of your contract unless your school goes bankrupt.
Ostensibly it is to stop people from flitting about.
We don't know if the OP is an illegal teacher but his "idea" may just be a non-starter due to this new rule. In any case it is skanky.
I would like to point out that coming here for the money and doing a good job teaching are not mutually exclusive. If you haven't noticed, this whole Korean English teaching industry is about money. Even the nicest "real" teachers get screwed by unscrupulous hagwon onwers after busting their butts. While your motives sound altruistic, there is a somewhat sanctimonious air about some of your posts intimating that people who are here for the money aren't interested in their students. I would venture to say that hagwon owners care even less about their students educationally than the people they hire. Get off the horse.

Sure they are not mutually exclusive. But I yet have to see one post from people "who are here for the money" that talks about educating their students. No horse here, simply mentioning a fact.
If one calls oneself a teacher, then one should be more concerned about the students learning. Just because the boss doesn't care, does not absolve YOU of all responsibility. |

There are quite a few Russians and Turks here teaching English. I am sure they would be more than happy to take our jobs. |
Ya the parents would just love that. Most still don't like Brits, Aussies and Kiwis. Never mind South Africans.

Or, Mr. Mankind, you can just buck up and try to be professional in what you do. Or, you could further your education so you could seek a more interesting position. Make sure the door doesn't slam on your b*tt on the way out, Mr. Mankind. |
Ah, sweetheart. How long have you been here? What a week? A Year? I'm in my 7th year now. Spent years in Univeresities have a solid education and know this country inside and out. The door ain't gonna hit me on the wait out, but you seem like the kind that it hit on the way in. I got a feeling your name will pop up again, in one of those 'I didn't get my bonus' posts.

But if enough legal teachers went elsewhere Korea then would be forced to solve the problem. If teachers did what you suggest, Korea could just change the law to make it mandatory to spend the full year in order to get the bonus and release letter. |
You do have to spend a full year to get the bonus. The Mok-dong office is even making it tough to get a release before 10 months has passed. You're describing what it is like now!
Truth be told. I don't think everyone should do what I suggested. If you like your job and you get everything you're owed without a hassle, you'd be a fool to leave the job and try your luck again. But many people hate their job, don't get paid on time, and are constantly fighting for everything they are legally owed. To them I say 'Screw your boss' He's screwing you and that won't change. So give it back to him in spades and make some cash out of it. Don't kid yourself into thinking that they wouldn't do it to you first, if they didn't have the chance.
You always here about EFL teachers being losers who can't hack it back home. Most of the responders to this post leave me understanding why. Your co-workers back home would eat you alive in a corporate office. You've got to look out for yourself. All these holier than thou posts leave me thinking that if you had real jobs before, you were passed up for promotion more than a few times. If you don't use a loop hole I guarentee some else will. If it exists and you need it, use it. If you don't, well than you're just plain stupid and deserve any difficulties you may have or get in the future.

Thats one of the best tricks I 've heard yet..apart from the one where the teacher advertised for loads of Privates, collected the money up front, then ran. You have to applaud the ingenuity, the collones, if not the ethics... |

Whoops I meant one month's pay not the bonus. If enough foreign teachers take advantage of this "loophole" then it will be closed sooner or later. And Korea being Korea, odds are it will be replaced with something worse. Better the devil you know than the devil you don't. |

Yes, but then that hurts the rest of us. How many people have had a negative experience with one Korean and then came on this board to rant "I hate ALL Koreans" Many times. You don't think Koreans think that way? They do buddy, they do. That kind of behaviour (leaving aside the legality and ethics of it) reflects badly on all of us. I think even Mr. Mankind would agree with that. |

Certainly. But that doesn't change the fact that they are here. And here's something else to consider. A Russian with good English would be impossible for most Koreans (whether they know English or not) to tell apart from an American or Canuck. The same goes for Brits Aussies and Kiwis of which there are many teaching here. |

You hogwanners owe nothing to your employers except that which is deemed in your contract. Take them for all they are worth if such opportunities become feasible. A loophole is a loophole, take advantage of it and run, because its yours for the taking. Enough said. Morals and business go together like like onions and ice cream. |

So there are only two kinds of English teachers in Korea. OK, that's established - I won't question your wisdom for one microsecond.
Which type are you? |
