based on your experience, what do they like to discuss, and/or what sorts of topics in their books (school textbooks, hakwon books, or outside commercial study guides) really hold their interest?

ex:

entertainers

humor and jokes

sports

movies/art

animals

dreams/jobs

got some more?

Food. All Koreans want to talk about food.
You could talk about fan death (for the bingo players) or Dokdo...

Ya, that caught my eye too. Shocked

My MS students like to talk about anime, cell phones, and... Well that's it, I guess. I don't know if I'd call them discussions though.

I actually talked about cell phones with one of my middle school classes today. We talked about the Mosquito, the ring tone that older people can't hear because of the high frequency.

They got a kick out of the article. Although I had to tell them that something like that would never work in my class because I'm young enough that I can still hear it. Laughing

Hehe, OP are you here teaching already? Looking for something specific?

For such a general question, I can only give you a general answer which is that it depends on the students, the class, and even the teacher. And just because a group of students are passionate about something doesn't mean they want to discuss it in class or with their teacher.

Rolling Eyes

as you well know, bosintang (if that is your real name), i decided to leave the teaching profession here (uni students) after 17 years, and now work for a major korean publisher.

i would like some insight from folks who are directly involved in teaching korean middle schoolers.

do you have any, insight, that is?

Park Yu Man, Delirium's Brother, and oneof thesarahs, thanks for the suggestions!

Jesus, I had no idea who you are. I thought you were a beginner wondering what kind of things you should prepare before stepping in a classroom.

Now that I know you're writing a discussion book, it changes things. However, since you decided to be so polite about it...

Yeah I have some insight, go screw yourself.

Hope things work out well for you.

Cheers,
