Yep, I'm still here, the wheat hasn't killed me yet.
The rice here is very starchy, and sticky rice, AKA glutinous rice is perfectly safe for people like you and me. The only thing you have to watch out for is barley rice. It's common to mix millet, sticky rice, brown rice or other grains with rice at restaurants. Sometimes they like to mix barley with rice as well. That's easy enough to see.
Are you coming to Seoul from Ireland, or have you been living in another part of Korea? I still stand by that food list I posted earlier, and most of that is readily available at restaurants all over Korea.
One cool new development since this thread first came out is RICE PIZZA. There's a Korean pizza chain that makes pizza out of a 100% rice flour crust, and they even deliver. It's called ImShil Pizza/임실피자. Their national hotline is 1688-1010 and their web site (all in Korean) is www.imsilpizza.com. Oddly enough, this did not develop because of celiacs in Korea, as there are almost none, but rather because many Koreans believe that rice is less fattening than wheat. |

thanks for that. I am travelling from Ireland on march 4th and arriving on march 5th. I would never dream of visiting seoul only for my son is teaching there for nearly a year now> His contract should be up at end march but he changed jobs so will stay now till just before the heat of the summer! so we decided to take the opportunity while he is there.
He loves it there. I am really looking forward to the visit since i have started to research where everything is. He is used to ordering the dishes that he likes but may have problems with new ones, so i reckon that some of his korean friends may be coming to dinner with us!!!
Are you settled out there now? Do you intend to stay?
Isnt it amazing with so much wheat in their diet that there aren't more coeliacs there?
Thanks for your help. will talk again i am sure. |

i forgot to say that yes on another message you had mentioned the rice pizza. I have never had a pizza of any sort so may have a try of this. I presume the staff are all korean so will have to ask the korean friends again for help!!
There is a restaurant in Lucan near Dublin in Ireland that serves g. f. pasta and pizza and i havent arranged to go there yet so it would be amazing to be able to have g.f. pizza in korea!! |

Cool. It would be great if you could add some more information by hitting the 'edit' button at the top. Don't worry about messing up because we can fix it later. |

| Oh. On the top of the 'wheat-free diets' article, there's a button marked 'edit'. If you push it you can add more information to the article, and since you seem to know a bit about wheat-free diets maybe you could improve it. |

oh ok. But i dont know a thing about wheat free/gluten free in korea. I only know about Ireland I am afraid and if i am travelling to anywhere I usually post on our irish website www.coeliac.ie and also bring translation cards with me but no one knew anything about Korea!!! so I had to go looking elsewhere.
If ever any of you are coming to Ireland I will gladly fill you in on restaurants, supermarkets etc. We have come a long way over here since I was diagnosed 25 years ago. |

If you don't get sick every time you eat a sandwich or drink a beer, there probably isn't any need to lose any sleep over not knowing what gluten is.

It has also been linked to autism and parents of autistic kids have reported remarkable success by simply removing gluten from their kids' diet. |

| I think all this gluten-free stuff is bogus. There's no way a human being could be intolerant to something as fundamental as grains. |

Thank you doctor, I'll try to remember that the next time I'm having a reaction.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celiac
But hey, what do I know? I must have just been imagining all that nausea and diarrhea all those years.
There's just no way it could have happened.
Seriously, getting by on a wheat-free diet isn't really that difficult. A meat and potatoes diet will work just fine, and there are plenty of foods in the Asian diet for a celiac to eat. I was born with it, so to me it's not really that big of a deal. I don't even really know what I'm missing. It's a lot harder for people who are diagnosed later in life, suffer through some pretty nasty symptoms for years without knowing why, then have to spend the rest of their lives going without foods they'd eaten their whole lives just to feel normal again. |

| I have no clue if I am intolerant to wheat or gluten. I know I never have a problem when I consume rice, but that is without gluten. However, I do sometimes get my stomach irritated when I drink beer, especially Korean beer. When I used to eat that sprouted bread called Ezekiel bread, I had no problem. As far as I know, gluten intolerance is associated with people of Scottish and Irish descent mostly and some Nordic people. I didn't have a problem eating bread as a kid but beer has given me somewhat of a problem but not wine or wisky. I did some kind of test and the doctor said I didn't have a celiac thing going on. However, I prefer to avoid wheat. |
