We just got paid today and on our pay outline it showed deductions for income tax. I'm pretty sure this is a mistake but im not sure. Is anyone else paying this by chance?

I'm a newb, but income tax is mandatory and is based on your monthly salary. It seems to be from 3-5%, but I have heard you can get the amount expressly stated in your contract. Maybe re-read yours.

Hope that helps. If I am wrong, please let me (and the OP) know.

Yes, in Korea, like many other nations on the planet, people pay tax on income.

Have you ever had a legal job where you didn't pay income tax?

Fruit picking and chain gang labor----- these wonderful occupations are available and don't charge a single dime for income tax.

---All other jobs take income tax.

Depending on your country of origin you may not have to pay income tax. American citizens don't have to pay it for their first two years in Korea. You're supposed to get some sort of residence certificate to give to your boss for it.

Aaron is talking about paying American income tax, not the Korean tax the OP is talking about. If your boss is witholding American income tax at a rate near 20% I would confront him immediately!

At least that is my understanding of it. If it's not required for the first 2 years, please correct me. I'll take an extra 60000 won a month!

Americans are exempt for 2 years if they are working for the government. That is all. Hagwons don't count.

But to the OP...thanks. I needed a good laugh! Not pay income tax? If you're seriously asking this, can I have some of the dopey pills you've been taking so maybe I can get high too?
