Wa? Not me. I too am trying to fathom how someone could do it. I just returned from a week in Canada, took a month in New Zealand two winters ago and another month in Canada the winter before that.

I agree about the money thing, but the trips have been so energizing that I can't imagine not having took them.

Without a single trip abroad for at least a week break? Shocked How does it feel to be you? And why do you have "return" in your username?

Stuff like this amazes me. Don't you ever take holidays outside the Republic? Like just to Japan or Guam for a few days?

Holidays are absolute crap. I've discovered this the most expensive, hard way. The amount of extra green, the extra xeros on my bank balance, I'd have if I didn't waste my time on planes, ending up tired and grouchy in some bloody foreign city, makes me actually bitter. Independently as an adult (childhood hols are awesome of course), I've seen some mildy interesting stuff, but I'd trade it all for the money saved. Travel is the most overrated thing I've observed. I'm jealous of folks like VanIslander who've not stepped foot out of Korea for 7 seven years - you must absolutely stink of money.

Shocked Shocked Shocked I thought I'd heard everything 'til now.

Well, actually, I think you share the same attitude as my mother, so nevermind. Just not something I'd expect from an expat!

Father O'Brien,
an Irish Missioner , has been here since 1957, that should take a bit of beating.

Actually, he went back to Ireland for a couple of months at least once I recall.

I started my career in Korea in 1978 however, intermittent breaks throughout the years were needed to attend schools, training, the occasional funeral of a family member, etc.

Why did you decide to stay/come back year after year?

Because there's no job that I could do back home that would be remotely as satisfying as my job here.
