Hi, I'm a new poster, who's been lurking on here for the bast 6 months or so. Can anyone give me some advice on where to find a Gym? I live right beside Haengshin Station, so it's very convenient for me to catch the commuter train into Seoul in the mornings. I'm looking for a GYM so I can keep myself busy, and hopefully meet some new faces in the process.
My search criteria are:
1. Location
2. Cost
3. Spinning Class
4. Some people who can at least somewhat comprehend English.
I did a search function (and googled) and found three in the Sinchon Area - Jamaica Club, Eagle Fitness and Yonsei Fitness/Club. Apparently JC is supposed to be on the 5th floor of the TGI Friday building, but when I got there, it wasn't there. And I also haven't been able to find where the other two gyms are. Does anyone know where they are? There is another gym I found in the area--Fitness Power, but they charge 80,000 won for a pretty small gym and don't satisify criteria 2,3,4.
I did a search for spinning classes, and came up with only California Wow, but I've read that it's exceedingly expensive for membership there. How much is one expected to be? I checked their English website and didn't come up with much. Also I heard that spinning is only offered at their Apkungjung Club which is a little out of the way for morning commutes. Does getting membership at one California Wow give you access to all their locations so I could go to the Myungdong club on the weekdays and spin on the weekends at Apkungjung?
Anyway, I am up for any other suggestions!! |

Exactly, you've hit the nail right on the head. It's wisdom like this, which apparently eludes me.
I'm actually a very avid cyclist, and ride competitively for fun back home. But the weather being what it is now, and the fact that my contract tentatively is ending at the end of May means it's just not cost effective for me be purchasing a bike. I've got a top end mountain bike at home, so I would probably look to purchase a road bike here, but frankly, I'm not sure that I'm comfortable riding centuries (100 mile rides) not being able to navigate effectively, or have a cell, etc..
A few others on my varsity team suggested I try out spinning for a good workout, so that's why I'm looking for a gym that offers that. After spending the last four months without a bike and devoted to my grad school applications, I am eagerly looking for some sort of physical release now that I've finally finished them all. On top of that, for me cycling is a solitary thing I generally like to do myself, which is not an issue back home, but here, I'd like to meet some people.
So to answer you question, no I'm not too lazy to walk. I just would prefer to do other things. Perhaps you could help me with my question now? |

If the gym is a big part of your routine then its worth spending the 1,300,000 or so it is to join California Wow for the year. This is by far the best gym I have ever used, it's excellent. Wonderful facilities, really nice staff, great locker rooms, great classes running back to back through the day, good spinning, staff that speak English. The cherry on the cake is that there is a constant array of really good looking women around. It's ace. You can have gold membership which is only one club, or platinum which is two. If you care about your gym, then this is the best club in Seoul, I am sure. |

I paid a million Won to join in Oct. That unlimited for all 3 locations (plus NOW OPEN in Tague!!). When I joined the sales rep told me that they're changing management tomorrow, so this price won't be available then. I thought it was classic BS of course and got the price 2 days later. But I just heard that they indeed did just change hands, basically whitey got the thing to turn a little profit and then sold it and the headaches that come from doing biz in such an 'advanced' country. Bottom line is I bet you can no longer join for anything near 1 mil. I just hope they don't start grandfathering in their new 'korean' policies which are sure to follow.

Thanks for the info,
California sounds great, but what what are their rates like per month? It doesn't look like I am going to be here for a complete year. I've never been much of a gym rat, generally preferring to keep fit though outdoor activity, so I don't know too much about what makes a particularly good gym, and what constitutes good value.
Anybody else have any suggestions about gyms, especially ones close by Sinchon? |

Calif is the only one I know with spinning classes and thats only at the Apujeong club. I always go to the Myeongdong club since its close to that subway station.
I hope the change in managment doesnt affect things as my membership is up for renewal in june. Like other people have said it is the best club in Korea no doubt. I do wish Golds would open up here, went to one in the states and they were great.
you aint gonna find much to meet your needs in the Sinchon/Hongdae area |
