Anyone who has watched Titanic movie, or Discovery or National Geographic channels knows something about ROVs. |

I'm with ajuma on this 100%. Now, I wouldn't have giggled, I would have Googled ("ROV technician" pulls up a mere 1,000-something results, "remotely operated vehicle technician" a whopping 9) first, and would have phrased my post rather differently than she did hers. But the idea that it's some common expression, commonplace job, the general public is all up to speed on ROV technicians, etc... Either somebody's pulling somebody's chain here, or else... no, that's the only possibility. |
Actually, my biz was commercial diving and all of us had some facility with ROV operation. Commercial divers are a dime a dozen so Google hits to the contrary aside, I think there are a whole lot of people who could put ROV technician (or ROV operator) on a job list. |

Of course I was being facetious as to "the only possibility", just as I was not wholly unaware of what a remotely operated vehicle is. What I was less clear on was the scope of their use beyond making the movie Titanic, NASA space exploration and.... what? The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau?

"remotely operated vehicle operator" brings up 14 hits. Five more than the 9 for "... technician". One surely expected more from a qualification that dime-a-dozen commercial divers have. Oh, and before any of you suggest otherwise, no, I don't believe Google hits determine every argument under the sun. But these particular ones should be telling you, if you're listening, that an expression you might assume to be a fairly common knowledge probably isn't. Certainly isn't in common usage on the modern medium of information of our times. |

yep, the response is real,
hey, that's why i love it here, Korea is charmingly crazy. The bondman fits in perfectly among the ragtag group of expats who prefer the lawless nature of a society obsessed with male dominated drinking orgies and the "anything for a buck" philosophy of life.
(actually, i have one of the best jobs in Khorarea, and i am a professional at work, but after work... i could easily win the freaky waygook contest. |

I see your facetiousness, and I raise you one.
There is an ROV included in my kid's LEGO Alpha Team undersea exploration set.
In Philippines, I visited the local expat bar and grill. Of the handful of guys there, one was an ROV specialist who worked for an oil company.
I didn't encounter any Korea based expats in Philippines.
I didn't encounter any ventriloquists anywhere, besides you.
How many ventriloquists can there be on the planet?
A few minutes of internet searching revealed the following facts:
I found there are many more ROV operators than ventriloquists,
but even if I combine the number of ROV operators and the number of ventriloquists, I am still outnumbered by dummies. |

There's a whole bunch I want to say, there seems like a whole bunch that needs to be said, but man, where to start...I'm reminded of the "Scrubs" episode where Dr. Cox and the Janitor are standing over Dr. Dorian's bed, drinking beer, watching him sleep. Dr. Cox says to the Janitor, "You, my friend, need some serious help, but gosh darn it, I'm not going to be the one to give it to you!"
