Ok, I've seen more outlandish political ideas on this current events forum than on any other forum on the Internet that I've visited, and that's saying alot. (yes, I'm looking at you ddeubel)
But who am I to say what is crazy or outlandish? That's an excellent question, and I'm so glad I asked myself that. In the end, there is only one thing that counts, and that's results. Success. Changing thoughts from just thought to reality.
But how can we judge the success of the opinions on this board when almost everyone here is an armchair politician, a theoretical pundit, a prophet of their own imaginary religion? Another excellent question! We can do it with a simulation.
Therefore, I propose the following: Everyone who has a political opinion on this board join in the following nation state simulation at http://www.nationstates.net/. From the web site: "NationStates is a free nation simulation game. Build a nation and run it according to your own warped political ideals. Create a Utopian paradise for society's less fortunate or a totalitarian corporate police state. Care for your people or deliberately oppress them. Join the United Nations or remain a rogue state. It's really up to you."
So lets do it. Lets see how the Incorporated States of Mateomiguel stands up against the Ddemocratic Ddespotism of Ddeubel. How will the Kingdom of Ya-ta fare in simulation when compared with Jinju Island? Lets see all your political ideals played out on a simulated stage, and we'll see which one of us is right, once and for all!
edit: hey, I just found out we can make our own region of the world and compete with each other.
How to play:
1. go to http://www.nationstates.net/
2. create your nation at the [create nation] link
3. look at the summary of your nation and note where it says: Location: the Pacific (or something similar)
4. click on the link, and on the new page you will find some information about your current region.
5. find where it says: Tired of life in the Pacific? Then move to a new region!
6. click it to change regions to our private region!
7. find where it says: Find a region: under Move to an Existing Region and search for "East Asian Peninsular"
8. you will see a description of the East Asian Peninsular region. go to where it says "Like what you see? Move Move <your nation> to East Asian Peninsular today! Click on the green part.
9. It will ask for a password. Enter: funkytown
10. you're in! We can play political games with each other all night long!

Here's my nation state:
http://www.nationstates.net/mateomiguel
If you don't want to click on the link...
The Republic of Mateomiguel is a tiny, economically powerful nation, remarkable for its barren, inhospitable landscape. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, cynical population of 5 million are rabid consumers, partly through choice and partly because the government tells them to and dissenters tend to vanish from their homes at night.
There is no government in the normal sense of the word; however, a small group of community-minded, pro-business individuals devotes most of its attentions to Law & Order, with areas such as Social Welfare and Religion & Spirituality receiving almost no funds by comparison. Income tax is unheard of. A robust private sector is led by the Automobile Manufacturing, Trout Farming, and Furniture Restoration industries.
Crime is a serious problem. Mateomiguel's national animal is the Eagle, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the golden cent.
Fear my Furniture Restoration industry! |

Quite interesting, I'll play along for a bit.
The Jingoistic States of Alfmanistan
The Jingoistic States of Alfmanistan is a tiny, safe nation, notable for its strong anti-business politics. Its hard-nosed, cynical population of 5 million are ruled without fear or favor by a psychotic dictator, who outlaws just about everything and refers to the populace as "my little playthings."
It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, corrupt, socially-minded government stops and the rest of society begins, but it is effectively ruled by the Department of Law & Order, with areas such as Social Welfare and Religion & Spirituality receiving almost no funds by comparison. The average income tax rate is 53%, and even higher for the wealthy. Private enterprise is illegal, but for those in the know there is a slick and highly efficient black market in Retail.
Crime -- especially youth-related -- is relatively low, thanks to the all-pervasive police force. Alfmanistan's national animal is the humanzee, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the bullet.
Let us see how this all plays out, my little playthings! |

The Republic of Junya
Motto: "Our business is our own business"
UN Category: Democratic Socialists
Civil Rights:Below Average
Economy:Reasonable
Political Freedoms:Some
The Republic of Junya is a tiny, environmentally stunning nation, remarkable for its compulsory military service. Its hard-nosed population of 5 million are fiercely patriotic and enjoy great social equality; they tend to view other, more capitalist countries as somewhat immoral and corrupt.
The enormous government juggles the competing demands of Law & Order, Education, and Healthcare. The average income tax rate is 32%, but much higher for the wealthy. A very small private sector is dominated by the Cheese Exports industry.
Crime -- especially youth-related -- is relatively low, thanks to a well-funded police force. Junya's national animal is the lion, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the dollar. |

The Democratic Republic of ESL Cafe is a tiny, safe nation, renowned for its devotion to social welfare. Its hard-nosed population of 5 million are fiercely patriotic and enjoy great social equality; they tend to view other, more capitalist countries as somewhat immoral and corrupt.
The government -- a sprawling, bureaucracy-choked, socially-minded morass -- juggles the competing demands of Social Welfare, Healthcare, and Education. The average income tax rate is 42%, but much higher for the wealthy. An almost nonexistent private sector is dominated by the Information Technology industry.
Crime is well under control. ESL Cafe's national animal is the head louse, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the bukkake. |

I think I'm going to be initiating an economic embargo against your country, gang ah jee. I fear for the safety of my bankers' eyes. |

man, I think this is going to be fun. These issues are hilarious. I think Police media liaison Jack Longbottom has a good point.
| Quote: |
The Issue
The Police department is considering installing surveillance cameras in all major public areas, in an effort to crack down on crime.
The Debate
1. "This is a blatant invasion of the right to privacy!" says libertarian web site operator Steffan Gutenberg. "Now I can't even go out in public any more without being watched? And you know this is just the beginning. Today there are cameras in city streets. Tomorrow they're peering through your bedroom window."
[Accept]
2. "Hey, I've got news for you," says Police media liaison Jack Longbottom. "When you're out in public, PEOPLE CAN SEE YOU. These cameras will be extremely helpful in reducing the national crime rate. Frankly, I can't see what the fuss is about."
[Accept]
3. "This 'slippery slope' argument has got me thinking," says Police Minister Billy-Bob Rifkin. "You know, it would be a lot easier to fight crime if we watched people all the time. Not with cameras, of course. That's clearly an invasion of privacy. But how about a national database of our citizens, coupled with compulsory ID cards and barcoding? It would stop crime dead in its tracks."
[Accept]
The Government Position
The government has yet to formalize a position on this issue.
If you wish, you may simply dismiss this issue.
To follow one of the recommendations above, simply click on the link. The Mateomiguel government will bring in the new law overnight.

The Holy Empire of Expatistan is a tiny, environmentally stunning nation, notable for its compulsory military service. Its hard-nosed, cynical population of 5 million are kept under strict control by the oppressive government, which measures its success by the nation's GDP and refers to individual citizens as "human resources."
The large, corrupt government devotes most of its attentions to Law & Order, with areas such as Social Welfare and Religion & Spirituality receiving almost no funds by comparison. The average income tax rate is 27%, but much higher for the wealthy. A substantial private sector is led by the Pizza Delivery industry, followed by Cheese Exports and Beef-Based Agriculture.
Crime -- especially youth-related -- is relatively low, thanks to the all-pervasive police force. Expatistan's national animal is the walrus, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the wangchun.
And so the games begin |
