It's about teaching English, but the similarity doesn't end there!
It's also about:
-- a whitey puling up tent spikes to go teach English in Asia
-- difficulties adapting to differences between cultures
-- the trials & tributations of life abroad
-- Asian employers screwing whitey by not sticking to contracts
-- Failure to honour promises re: housing
-- the midnight run and the punishment for same (no, not whitey teacher, but other characters)
-- fur'ners putting on plays that ridicule local authorities
