Tonight I was in Dunkin' Donuts, doing nothing more provocative than being hunkered down over my laptop, getting a new HD in order, and drinking a coffee. I've even got a Korean flag on my laptop in honor of Korea. Anyway, this slightly drunk retarded Korean guy came into Dunkin' Donuts, did this retarded dance behind me to get my attention. Eventually I came out of my concentration and noticed a Korean retard dancing behind me. I turned around.

"Do I know you?"

He started shouting "Go home! I fight you!" Something like that. Then he walked out and kind of made some more laughably threatening gestures out on the street and then continued on his way to the nearest soju tent or something.

If I didn't have my laptop (and fear he might try to smash it), I think I would have mocked him a bit. Instead I just turned away.

Anyway, three years in Korea, that was my first time. Although a long long time ago I had some old ajumma shouting at me about something but who knows.

Anyway, I don't have any sweeping generalizations to make, other than maybe this guy really needed to get laid.

Stuff like that happens to me every day. Life here would be kinda boring without stuff like that, wouldn't it?! Very Happy

You mean fight you at your home?

Koreans aren't very good at taking responsibility. If you'd closed your laptop and started rolling up your sleeves he'd have still split. He was acting for a crowd/excessive dutch courage.

Minor irritation.

One of the perks to living in this country is nobody has ever tried to pick a fight with me. I'm waiting for the day something like this happens to me. Certainly not every day.

You should have told him that he was drunk and that it was time for him to go home.

Man the retarded attention-getting dance is barkin hilarious. I haven't been hanging out in random spots alone in awhile, so it's been months since I've seen one, but oh do I love it!

You're saying your reflexes are not better than a drunk dude's?

But for real, this was your first racist experience? I experience minor racism almost all the time, especially when shopping. Maybe we have different definitions of racism, but I don't think it necessarily has to be malicious. Like, when the store clerk doesn't say a godamn word to me but the next person gets the full on politeness routine.. it's racism, isn't it? I mean, if I were a gyopo, that kind of thing would turn out differently, right?

Should have been in a Krispy Kreme. They do a better job of keeping the riff raff out.

The everyday stuff is more rude than racist.

I mean,if you're getting crap service are you gonna say "It's cos I'm white isn't it?" or "Can't you be better towards your custoners? What's the matter with you?"

Sure,it wouldn't happen if we were Korean(as if we want to be Confused )but it doesn't really pay to play a race card.

Reminds me of a time I experienced racism. I was on my scooter and a white guy got in my face before realising I was white too. I would've got off my scooter and enrolled him in the Doctor Marten Dental Plan if there wasn't a chance he could smash the scooter.

You keep calling him "retarded" -- do you mean that literally? I'm not getting PC on you here. Just wondering if something looked wrong with him besides drunkenness & xenophobia.

Your episode reminds me of the one I had at the big KFC branch in Daehangno. I was sitting at a table with a friend when this white dude, mid- to late-20s walks in alone. We're not far from the counter so we see him waiting to place an order. Then two Korean late-teens, both guys, come in behind him. They see him and right away start with the usual antics. (giggling, mock Engrishee noises, and jumping... you know, sort of mocking his height?) He turns around to see what's going on, and they suddenly act innocent... and then start right up again. This went on for a little bit, as there were several customers ahead of him. Other customers and even cashiers at other registers notice what's going on. Their response? Snickers & giggles.

One of the two pranksters starts doing the... martial arts version of shadowboxing? You know, you pretend to dash someone with kicks & blows that come ever closer, but never quite connect? Now these boys didn't look at all like thugs. Just average young Korean guys having fun. But the weygook actually looked kinda rough. Kinda scary. I wouldn't want to tangle with him, but I don't think scary looks on foreigners fully register with Koreans. Or they do, but Koreans just aren't concerned, they know they hold all the cards, and it's 46 million against 1.

I started to get up and my friend was "Shocked What are you doing?!" "I'm just getting some more fries... Wink " Of course I didn't get any fries, I got in line a few steps behind the two troublemakers. They were just coming too close to beaning that weygook, and he was already steamed and looked the type who'd make them pay for it. I wanted to position myself in case they actually swatted him and then tried to run off. I knew in my mind this wasn't my fight and I wasn't going to fight with anyone no matter what happened. But by the same token, I was prepared to do everything short of fighting to make sure they never reached those doors.

In the end nothing happened. The guy placed his order and the two pranksters got called over to another register. Best that way, but makes for boring Dave's news. Confused

Man, I mustn't have realised that I have been a minority ever since I moved here! I am so gonna say this every time some one bothers me from now on. Anyone know how to say it in Korean?
