I've never had the dexterity to pull off anything more than riding a skateboard so I don't mean to sound disparaging with my post.

When I was in high school, I'd walk past a murder of junior and senior high kids trying to do kick flips and other really simple moves. They never ever ever ever landed anything...ever (not that I saw). It didn't really make sense to me that people would get out a skateboard and half assed try to do a move but never be willing to commit to that second, "you probably will get hurt now" step. Got me thinking that those skateboarders in particular were a straange bunch.

After I saw this video of the 8year old skateboarding twins.

I got to thinkin: There are obviously people out there who CAN do tricks.

Who out there can do tricks? What can you do? You have any videos we can watch?

As much as I loved skating, I can't do crap on a short board...I would just fall and feel the pain. I gave up. But when I moved to the UK I met this guy who was into long-boarding and I gave it a go. 10 times better I tell ya. It's all about going out for a carve or doing some downhill. And if you got the right street with no cars and the pavement was smooth enough, after a couple of pumps you could cruise for a good distance. I found it to be much more satisfying.

I skated with a short board for a while in high school, but it was strictly street skating, nothing too fancy. I could do ollies, and could grind on a good day, but that was about it. Really, it was just a fun way of getting around in my little town, and most of my friends were skateboarders so I figured I should learn so I wouldn't become one of those weird skater hanger-on-ers.

At my best, I was kick-flipping over chain barriers in parking lots (about knee -high). For proof you can go to my music site (plug, plug) www.zebox.com/treevortex and look at the pictures of me ollieing over couches and backside 180-ing over considerable sets of stairs.

My trick vocabulary at one time was in the hundreds. I am a little rusty now, and I appreciate just going fast, carving, and doing big ollies now. I will return someday, and people in Toronto will wonder: "Why the f.uck is that 40-year old riding a skateboard?"

dae-won song rules! And Rodney Mullen is just mind boggling. A few more of my favourites: Kris Markovich, Matt Hensly, Eric Kosten, and Mark Gonzales.

Funny you post those. i remembered seeing a rodney mullen video YEARS ago and thinkin' that he was berserk. I went straight to youtube (after finding his name again) and watched RM videos for ages.
And Dae-won song videos too. But I'm not as impressed with him.

Like Daewon, do you?

He was Thrasher's skater of the year last year. Mostly because of this.

Hey Zobot,

Do you still have the 40mm wheels and massive pants? I got a nice little collection from back in the day. Man, did I look like a dork.

I got to say. Moving to Korea was the best thing for this 30something skater.

Rodney Mullen has always been super human!

It wasn't really a question of yours, but I'll answer it anyway:
Why are the skater kids constantly trying those tricks that they can't land over and over again?
Because they desperately want to be able to do them.

I used to be one of those skater punks. That's what we would do- get together and try tricks over and over again and we would usually fail. That didn't stop us from trying.
It seems there are a million different ollie tricks. No matter how many times I tried to do an ollie kickflip, I could never land it. That didn't stop me from trying what seemed like thousands of times.
The trick I could do, which none of my friends could, was the ollie airwalk. Mullen invented it and we thought is was so cool. I attempted it for ages, then finally figured out how. My friends were in awe, but then they could do kickflips and I couldn't.
We had one friend who could ollie so high, it seemed ridiculous. We always tried to do it, too, but just couldn't emulate it.
It's just a funny thing how people can just do certain things when most can't.
By god, we tried. Yes, we tried!

I was a skater for about 7 years. It was a religion to me and I showed my faith on a daily basis. God I wish I never stopped. But, alas, you can only deal with so many sprained ankles and I developed a really bad back in my later highschool years.

The thing about kids never really landing anything is that skate boarding is farking difficult. Or maybe you just happened to see a bunch of pansies. It seems that there is a mental barrier that you have to get past in order to start landing more and more difficult tricks. As soon as you get it in your head that you will REALLY try to land (it) this time, then you do. It's easy to go through the motions, but it takes balls and determination to force your feet to land on the board.

another reason for a lot of those videos looking good - editing. if you see a pro skate on a mediocre day, he's going to bail on 60% of the more difficult stuff he/she tries.

rodney and daewon series, super-tech. definitely godlike. mullen was a god when he was wearing pink shorts and using shin pads.

i'm more into gnarly street dudes like geoff rowley, andrew reynolds, and kerry getz. kerry getz is one dude who can put together a consistent run of 10-15 tricks and nail every one.
