whats the deal with leaving korea for a holiday (to china or thailand) and then returning to the country on the same visa?

Is this allowed?

If you're a British citizen, which I assume that you are as the Arthur Fowler avatar would be really strange otherwise, it's free to get a re-entry permit(it used to be anyway). I know for most other nationalities it makes sense to get a multiple re-entry but as a single takes very little time and doesn't cost a penny, you're better off getting that.

Good info here so far. I would also add that re-entry permits are not necessary if you are still on the first year of your visa and that visa is a multi-entry visa.

For example, I am American, so when I get a new job, my visa is a multi-entry visa. That visa expires after one year, so I have to extend it. However, the "multi-entry" nature of it is not extended, so starting the second year, (since I travel every year) I must buy a separate re-entry permit each year. But, as I said, I don't need one the first year because my visa is already a multi-entry.

So if you are in the middle of your first year at your current job, you need to check your visa. Under the heading "Entries" if there is an "M" (multiple entry), and this visa's expiry date printed on it has not yet passed, then you do not need a re-entry permit of any kind. However, if it says "S" (single entry) or if the visa's expiry date has passed, then you need to go to immigration and get a re-entry permit before you leave.
