How do you go about getting this? Has anyone done it? How much does it cost? How long does it take on average?

I guess it varies from country to country.
In the UK, it took between 10-15 days.

Are criminal record checks usually requested in Korea? If so, how long are they valid for?

I have no problem getting one, and as one of my best friends is the DPO for the local police force I can probably get it at short notice, but if they are requested regularly I would rather plan ahead and get it soon.

I am thinking of just going to the US embassy and getting the signed affidavit. I tried one of the online criminal searches, and wasn't too happy with the printable results they sent me. They were pretty weak, and I don't want to take a chance with another online scam. At the embassy, you basically write on the official affidavit paper "I swear that I don't have a bad record", or something to that effect, and the embassy stamps it. It costs 30 bucks.

SAMPLE AFFIDAVIT:

SUBJECT: Affidavit of (No/Few/Some/Many) Criminal Record

To whom it may concern:

I, ___ChuckECheese____, swear or affirm under penalty of perjury under the laws of the "ChuckEcheese Land" that I have (no/few/some/many) criminal record (nor/and) committed (violent) crimes.

I understand that this sworn statement is required by law because I have applied for a public school teaching position with the Seoul/Pusan/Incheon Education Office of Republic of Korea.

I further acknowledge that making a false, fictitious, or fraudulent statement or representation in this sworn affidavit is punishable under the criminal laws of the "ChuckECheese Land" as perjury in the first degree and it shall constitute public execution in the ChuckECheese Stadium.

Signed under oath in the city of Seoul, Republic of Korea, on 1/1/2007.

Signed
ChuckECheese

You just pay $30 for the U.S. Embassy Stamp and you should be good to go. Cool

eerrrr, how would anyone know if you hadn't lied on the affidavit? Seems to me there would still be a criminal record check required to verify the absence of that factor... Very Happy

For Canada info is at the Canadian Embassy in Seoul site. It's 18 dollars U.S. You mail your fingerprints, all ten fingers and thumbs, to Ottawa (RCMP). The prints are made at a Korean police station and the person printing you signs his name. You must include a prepaid courier envelope to get the paper sent to you in Korea. I am about to do this though I am not a crook!
