People with 360s...I'm not sure how the "Live" experience works, but I guess it's like playing multi-player on the PC. Unfortunately, I haven't had a universally good experience with the PC in Korea. Often my pings are too high and I get kicked or I have a lot of lag. Using Teamspeak (headset communication) makes it even worse.

What about the 360? Are there good Asian servers? Are there "high pings" to worry about? extreme lag compared to N.America? Good download speeds for game add-ons, etc.?

Bottom-line, is it worth it to buy an Xbox 360 solely for the online experience if I live in Korea?

I got my 360 on Saturday and I've only played Gears of Wars and it was fine. The headset didn't work that well but who cares.

carroonb, thanks for the input. Could you be a little more detailed about your experience? Was there any "jerkiness"? What was the headset problem. Thanks.

Well, i've barely touched my 360 since coming here (not having a bigscreen to play on just makes it bleh), but I can make some guesses that might help.
First, with xbox Live, there aren't servers like you would think of with other multiplayer pc games (well, fps's and such). XBL is centralized, so MS handles everything. The 360 is regional though, so if you're buying a Korean or Japanese version, you'll likely be playing with other people in the Asian area. Even if MS doesn't have localized servers for for its different regions (I would think they would, but I'm not really sure), everyone you will be playing with will be in the same situation as you pretty much. If you have a US 360, then you might indeed run into some lag issues. With other online games with servers based in the US, about a 500ms ping is the best I can ever get.

When buying one keep the regions in mind. Unless you are staying in Korea for a very long time or you don't mind ordering Korean region games and having all of your online gaming in Korean, I would opt for a US version even if it means having it get it and all of your games shipped in while you're here (I searched all over Yongson for a US copy of Gears of War and had no luck Sad ).

EA games for the 360 use EA servers.

That's a good point splok...Thank you for the info. I'm planning on staying in Korea for some time but I don't want Korean language games. As far as I've seen, the region is for ALL of Asia, not just Korea, so English language games should be available, right?

do they? I haven't heard that, but then I don't have any EA games. Even so, I would assume that there would be regional EA servers too (or at least groups players based on region). It would be pretty inconvienent for people to need to cooperate with players speaking a different language.

Also, if you want games in English, I definately would not get an Asian region 360. Keep in mind that with an Asian 360 will likely have you playing online with and against people that don't speak English (and I would have to assume that the Asian players will still be grouped by country even though there may only be one region just for language reason).

All my games are Korean and so is my Xbox 360 and everything is in English. All the Western made games will have English menu options. I have Oblivion, Gears, Fight Night Round 3 and Project Gotham 3 and all are in English. You just choose the English language menu option on the Xbox. Online games will often be in English. All the Gears of Wars online games I've played have been English language so I wouldn't worry about that. I've had little or no lag of any sort while playing Gears, definitely not jerky. Also the headset only seems to work for me before and after matches. I never speak so that might be the problem or my settings are wrong. But overall its an excellent service.

carroonb, that's good news! I'm glad you're having a good experience with it. I'm excited to get one.
