In contracts, is it standard to have a "teaching hour" equal exactly 60 minutes regardless of class length and number of classes, or have a teaching hour equal however long the class is (40-50 minutes, usually)?

For example:

120 teaching hours could be 120 40-50 minute classes (between 4800 and 6000 minutes of total teaching time)

OR

120 teaching hours could be exactly 7200 minutes of teaching (144-180 classes).

Which is the standard, if there is one?

There doesn't seem to be a standard, which is why it's a good idea to ask the school you are dealing with what their definition is.

My current contract has me working 22 'hours' a week, but in reality it is a lot less because some periods are 45 minutes and some are 50, but there is a total of 22 of them. Some hakwons require teachers to work 120 hours a month but the number of classes is greater than 120 because the class is shorter than 60 minutes. Ask before you sign on the dotted line.

Depends on if the school is a reasonable outfit or a pack of blood sucking weasels out to bleed you dry. My first job was 120 40-minute classes. After that how could I ever accept 120 HOURS? Crazy talk. A man's gotta prep.
