As for clubs, Matmata and Myung gol won in Hongdae spin some good stuff when there is no party in town, they are right next to each other and often host mini-parties with local talent. The problem is, Korean DJ's seem to be like most Koreans and just go with whatever new "Fad" is happening in the scene.. even if the fad is years old. They used to spin some great trance, now they seem stuck on spinning Breaks.. which I can't stand, but whatever. A few months ago it was Progressive and a few months before that it was Jungle.
but are there very many djs who consistently play, and are known for their speicific sound? like consistent techno or dnb djs?
im a serious music snob and i really hate trance, progressive house and some kinds of dnb. im a techno head, and mostly crave nothing but |

sickboys have retired.. last I heard he was organizing raves in BALI,
O2 is still live and active..
I never said hongdae doesnt play trance.. I just said they play wannabie styles.. they are years behind us YEARS!!!
I was partying there 5 years ago when TANCE was huge back home and they were still playing 2 year old hits.. even today when I walk in..
the djs here just dont have the culture like the peeps back home,,
the dancers, patrons, all same.. they dont take it seriously so its not serious TRANCE.. back home it was a lifestyle.. |

| Silly. I think people forget what clubs are for sometimes in their attempts to claim to have had the better or rather cooler experience. When last in London (summer 2001) I felt clubbing was all starting to get a bit pass and boring (too many pisshead drunks), and I started going to see great new bands from New York and Detroit and all. Id been raving and pilling for spells for over ten years, done Ibiza, Rimini all that. On arriving in Korea, I only saw the chance to do it all again, only this time completely surrounded by beautiful young Asian women who were mostly experiencing it for the first time, the candy as well, some of them. Mostly in Hongdae. I didnt give a sh*t that Id heard the tunes before, because the feeling was there. Trance music is pass now whatever way you look at it and wherever you are, its used in TV commercials and exercise videos for Christ sakes, Drum & Bass gets used to give street cred to tossers like David Bowie and gets diluted accordingly. It doesnt stop it being fun though, I like a good DJ and looove Grooverider, but you cant beat the vibe of a good club, and people having a great time. |

Agree with Butterfly, there is a tendency to view the scene through rose tinted specs...I remember going to see Carl Cox in 1995, getting completely off my face and having a great time..of course there were lads there I knew saying, " Oh, you should have been clubbing in 1991, it was less commercial etc etc".
I have met people who say it was the same in 1987 in london, people saying acid house was commercial beep and the true clubbers were into northern soul...
The scene in hongdae suffers I think from the sheer amount of identikit clubs, but you can have some great nights..more to do with the people you are with and meet than who the DJ is or how upfront the records are
Here are some good sites
www.technogate.co.kr
www.afroking.com
www.subline.co.kr
Itaewonguy, I could say the same about the North American scene, years behind the UK, but thats due to a myriad of reasons, just as the scene here is behind the US for numerous reasons too.... |

I went and saw DJ johan Geilen at the Sheraton walker hill a coupkle months ago and he rocked. It was really good progressive trance and I had some goodEEs.
Not telling you where I got them though but there are some left still. Once all the posers leave it was a really good night. Just be the last to leave and don't make it to obvious. the cops have gone by then and you still have the morning to buzz. Did see some guys get hauled away though only because they were going nuts(definantly fisrst time Korean users) but have never come close to being caught here. i am aware what would happen though and be very careful just in case. i just love the buzz. |

He rocked??????????? I thought that was an utterly chronic show, too many kickouts, standard tunes, superstar DJ crap. I have seen Sasha about five times, and never seen his face once, you dont need to see his face because you know when he is on the decks, but that Gielen guy, what is so special about him except that he jumps up on top of his stage and throws t-shirts out into the crowd? Fuggin' cheezie. Goddam GI's with glow sticks on strings (the most irritating thing on earth) everywhere. Everyone left early didn't they? Man its funny the perception people have, of the same experience. Give me a night in Hongdae or Apkujeong any day before I sit through that crap again. The guy is a complete tosser. |

I'm aware he was pretty cheesy and the music was semi-commercial but for the mood I was in I didn't give a flying f***. I definantly agree with you on the GI thing. About 10 times during the night different GI's would ask me where can you get some E?? My standard reply, i don't know what you are talking about, there isn't any in Korea.
Down here in the deep south of Kyeong Sang nam Do where techno music is Koyote and Lee Jeong Hyun it was a pretty good night for me. My opportunities for nights out in Seoul are pretty rare.
Just give me back gatecrasher |

I pulled this off the Korean Herald web boards for those interested.
As for the glow-sticks on strings, I hate it too, but I find its mostly the Korean chicks who bring those to the parties and the GI's hit on them by asking to borrow them and show off their "mad skills". Anyhow... |

if you want Techno then look out for Sven Vath at the the Walker Hill Hotel, North Eastern Seoul on Sept 20th (sat) for more info try 02's website at www.02pro.com
02 usually try and throw at least one pretty big party once a month, for those of you bitchin about the DJ's they are bringin in try and remember they are not just trying to push one type of sound, they are trying to please everyone by bringing in different DJ to cater for all tastes, and if you look at the they're previous events they have covered most genre's electronica.
If you are looking for a good regular nights every weekend then Hongdae is the area, if you don't follow the masses to Matmata and are prepared to look around then you will find somewhere that plays what you want to hear.
For those who are intersted, there is a new Jazz/Downtempo/experimental
night started at Bar Nana in Iteawon every other thursday, 5,000 won entry, plus free drink, free food, and various free shots throughout the night, last time there was over 100 people there, next 1 is this thursday (Chu-sok) ...pm me if you want more info |

these days its annoying for me to hear ignoramuses, newcomers or young candy ravers talking about "theres a rave coming up this weekend!" i joined the southern ontario scene in 1996 - very late - and the rave aspect of it was in its death throes. i would say the last toronto rave was sometime in 1997. after that fewer and fewer promoters were willing to do events in non-club spaces and police repression intensified. there was also just such a big influx of commercial events. some of the "old timers" say that the toronto rave scene was dead by 1995! ah well, i think i was very fortunate to have experienced the few incredible events i did while they were still happening. probably the only "rave" i ever attended, and the promoters of this event would totally disagree that it was a rave was the legendary Minimal party in toronto on thanksgiving weekend 1996. the techno room consisted of two sources of light - a green laser and a strobe. plus richie hawtin, algorithm and speedy j played. it doesnt get more intense than that, nor has it ever since. i guess a lot of people who werent involved in the scene have no idea what the underground thing was really like, but i just get really annoyed that people can attach the term "rave" to a cheesey event in a sleazy club that costs $40 advance. its like saying to a veteran of the 60's, "hey! theres an acid test going on this weekend!" <eyes roll> the contexts in which acid tests and raves took place are gone along with the movements. doesnt mean however that other, different and equally cool and subversive cultural movements wont spring up in the future. |

I agree with that..
the thing is the younger crowd of today and half the foreigners who attend the SO CALLED RAVES here. were never really ravers back home they will lollie pop wannabies!!
so they come here and think they are the S.H.I.T!
I have been to raves with 10.000 people all goning hard for 12 hours!!!
I been to so called club raves where it lasts 6 hours and its full of CHEESE!
problem is many people dont acually even know what a rave is..
I havent been to as many raves as I wish I had..
wish I made it England to check out one of their raves..
I did do a forest rave which was AWESOME though..
germany, holland, USA, CANADA, all have great raves..
korea will NEVER NEVER NEVER!!! have anything close to JAPAN!
korea tries so hard to be better than the rest, but is a dying dream!!
yes promotors are bringing big names here,, paying 10-20.000 dollars all up! charge us 40.000 - 70.000(fatboyslim) man did he SUCK!!!
they need to make the money back.. its all business thats all!!
they dont care about our feelings. they charge 8000 or 10.000 for a drink!
I have been to few parties here.. mostly the big name DJ.s
paul van dyk, Ferry corstien and others..
they were ok.. but nothing like if it was held in toronto,or Sydney, or better yet LONDON!
dancing is about feeling.. feeling the music.. and feeling the power from the people dancing next to you.. makes it all complete.. korea will never have that,,
now the police arrange these raves with the promotors to just catch people having a good time! many times I have seen cops take out 10's of people for piss tests, friends have been arrested they forced to became narcs at other parties..
they make the drink prices so expensive you can only really afford to only drink 2-3 all up you already spent 70-80.000 and you're not even pissed.. so you run to the 7-11 and scull a soju bottle!!
ITS A JOKE!! then trying to dance at 150-180 beat tracks on SOJU!
yeah oK!!!
now I look forward to my trips to IBIZA or other places where parties are WILD! people can dance! and plently of candy for flipping!!
all this being said..
I will still attend parties here.. only when BIG NAMES come though..
I am not supporting this scene because they have never gave anything back or never will give anything.. they think they have gave us by bringing him over!! I DONT THINK SO!! we paid for him!!! |

being a complete techno snob, i doubt i would go out much in korea unless someone good is playing like richie hawtin, jeff mills, autechre, monolake, etc. im not much into dancing for the sake of it, nor am i big on getting fucked up.
the thing with "raves" is that i dont think they exist anywhere anymore. just like 60's acid tests. rave culture at one time was a lot more than just music and dancing and drugs. it was entire perspective on society and culture. the underground paradigm was inseparable from the rest of the experience. it was all about transplanting amazing music and dancing and interaction into spaces where that doesnt usually happen - like old warehouses, or factories or fields. it was about taking the music out of the commercial realm of clubs and the passive realm of home stereos and letting it do something to you in an "unconventional" space. there was a time in the late 80's and early 90's when rave was internatinoal to an extent. underground parties would be happening simultaneously in england and north america and the big djs like hawtin or dj hype would be participating in different strains of the same movement on either side of the atlantic. although i still love the music, today it has completely lost all of that. today its about clubs and performances and business. and we should accept all of that for what it is. amazing experiences can still happen today and they do, but its not rave, and never will be again. |

For the folks not in the know, I'm going to make clear what has been implied here, but not simply stated. If it's in a club, it doesn't matter who's playing, it's not a rave.
Some of the best times of my life were at "The Gathering" in Takaka, New Zealand. Beautiful secluded feilds surrounded by lush native bush, on a big hill miles and hours from anywhere, no alcohol so cops not even interested, 10,000 people, no theft no violence, all kinds of great food stalls, DnB tent, House tent, and huge outdoor Trance zone, beautiful people, beautiful vibes, great weather, plenty of goodies around, and two solid days and nights of of world class vibes pumping non-stop. I went there 5 times, when I could locate Edward you couldn't get me out of the House tent the whole time, if Alex was visiting I would roam around, but always return to the funked up super dooper disco-fried tech-soul sexed up love-in that was the House tent. Gotsta keep it funky y'all.
Best times ever. |
