I was really impressed with it. Lots of great cafes and restaurants, as well as shopping. I wasted about an hour and a half in one cafe alone sitting in a big comfy chair. They have massage places there as well. I think they have shower and lounge facilities there as well. It's quite a modern airport.

LOL...it just opened last month! Seems there are quite a few problems, Thai air are removing their domestic operation back to Don Muang, the old airport.

Yeah, it's only about 75% done. Expect to see construction still going on in the place. But that's the Thai way -- open a place up before it's even complete.

is the new airport further from the city center or closer?

the old airport had a convenient shuttle bus system that only cost a couple of bucks to the nana area (35 minutes or so).

5 hours isn't too long. you could go to a spa and get a massage, check out a temple, go have a few drinks somewhere, go shopping in siam square, catch a movie ....

i doubt i would sit around an airport that long even if they did have a lot of stuff as they are usually way over priced

With the new elevated motorways it's possible to get a taxi from the airport to Banglampu or Siam Square in a little over 30 minutes for around 200 Baht plus 65 Baht for tolls.

stay in the airport or just take a taxi straight to kao san road for some shopping. bangkok is the most nasty, polluted, dirty, disgusting, boring, confusing, ill-mannered city i have ever had the displeasure of going to full of odious rude idiots just waiting to rip you off.

stay in the airport. kao san has really cheap REALLY nice bikinis though and if you like Lacoste...youre in luck!

kao san road is a dump ....and it's further than a lot of other areas from the airport. the only reason to go there is to meet other westerners (if that's your thing) or get cheap tickets out of bangkok.

i like bangkok ....wouldn't want to live there, but i think you are unduly harsh of the place.

yea...i particularly hated it. wed just come back from cambodia where everything was easy and perfect and we went to thailand were everything was annoying and laborious. we left after 2 days and ended up in pattaya, which was actually a BLAST. but if i want to go to a dumpy overcrowded polluted city center, i'll go to LA...
