hahaha!!! Thank you! You have sense and style, 'cause you are sooooo right. Whitey is NOT dying out and your avatar rocks, Hello Kitty style, all the way, girl!!!! When I was back in the states, I could barely leave the house without seeing some preggie whitey. The newspaper was full of birth announcements. Whitey ever dying out? I don't think so. Most likely, the US will have to impose a one child law like China. Oh yeah, that's right. China has sense, and the US doesn't. Americans put Bush in office, right????? |

| "Whitey" is not a passenger pigeon. "Whitey" came about due to environmental factors. Given enough time in the north, the descendants of the darkest skinned people people in the world would become "whitey" |

| It's actually the "most" part of the headline that I find strange. It seems misleading at best, and incorrect possibly, to say that 51% or 52% is "most". I notice they do that with polling numbers as well, like: "Most Americans support the war in Iraq, with 50.5% supporting it." |
UHHH....WHAT?!
If more than half of people do something, then this means MOST people do that thing. Most is synonymous with majority.
I'm not one to pick fights, and I almost didn't post anything, but I don't understand how someone could think that something over 50% out of a total of 100% is not "most." |

This is why the phrase "dying out" should be banned from the discussion. Obviously, one billion people or more aren't going to die out any time soon. Mind you, proponents probably only use the phrase rhetorically, not literally, but still, it leads some readers in the wrong direction and away from the important thing: low birthrates.
Affluent societies aren't producing enough babies. Some, like Germany and Japan, are producing far too few. On the face of it, you might think one or two fewer people in crowded countries like Japan and Germany won't do them much harm, but if that were the case, the German government would not have, since the 1970s, constantly thought up initiatives to get more German babies born (to no avail, presumably, since 30% of German women will die childless).
Smaller and falling populations, with more old people than young, is pretty f**king dire in my opinion. Rather than "dying out", low birth rates surely entail falling (and larger elderly) populations, shrinking workforces, dramatic increases in pensions and medical care. An average of 2.1 children per woman is the requirement to maintain, merely maintain current levels in the industrialized West - not 1.3 or less. In those circumstances, in just roughly two generations, the under-30 population may be reduced by 50 percent!
I confess I love bullying things that Western wusses hold dear - like egalitarianism. But really, I'm not anti-egalitarian. Anyone who's ever spent an hour in a real classroom knows girls outperform boys educationally and we need these girls in the workforce. Some inevitably don't want babies. However, girls should be given greater choice. I propose making mothering a state job like teaching and nursing. State benefits are crap. We need to make it a salaried profession. |

| My only complaint about articles like this is that they make it sound like something has changed and women and men just don't need each other anymore. I couldn't disagree more. While there are always statistical outliers, most people need others. It's normal, natural, and human. This whole idea that marriage and families are outmoded somehow is just bizarre, to me. I understand if someone chose poorly and they don't want to repeat that mistake. That's fine, but that doesn't mean the rest of us don't want - or need - the chance to make that choice for ourselves. |
Well, I am in my 30s, and I am not married. Maybe I will get married. Finding that right person is tough. Many people in the industrialized world often do not have the same strong familial bonds that is found in other societies. Also, so many of us are focused on either having fun as much as possible or a career. Marriage does not seem to have the same importance as it once did in the West. I don't share that view. There are also many people worried about getting married because of the high divorce rate, but you have to take the risk. We also expect our mates sometimes to be perfect. No one is perfect. |
