Yeah, you're right.
I work with men and women also in their 50s and 60s.
They've retired from various professions such as the military and teaching in countries like Canada, America and South Africa and now enjoy teaching EFL in Asia.

Where'd you go in Japan? What were you doing for a month?
I'm back thinking about Taipei and perhaps Kobe or somewhere in Japan. Actually I have a deal with myself that I can't leave Asia until I have a certain amount of $$ saved up. Not an extraordinarly huge $ number.. basically US$10,000.. but the problem is that I'm in debt and have to get out of that first. Then head off to either grad school or South America.
However, re-reading and thinking about everything.. and TAIPEI sounds very attractive!! I'd like to check that city out.
I've been to Japan four times maximum of 4 days each. I did like all the attractive women running around. However the money thing was a serious problem. I just couldn't really enjoy myself.
That being said, I'm very curious about first-hand impressions of KOBE and perhaps SAPPORO. Anyone been to those cities? I've visited Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Shimoseki, and Hiroshima.
Basically, my impressions were that Tokyo was too big, too difficult to get around, too impersonal (which is odd because I love Seoul and every other big city I've been in). But I think it was the high costs involved with getting anywhere that bothered me the most.
Osaka rocked. I really like that city alot, and I'm sure I could easily live there. Perfect size, large which I like. But manageable to get around it seems without spending alot of $$ just to get from point A to point B.
I hated Kyoto. I found it incredibly boring and dull. Interesting to a point, a day or so, but living there would drive me to nuts.
Hiroshima was alright. Half-way decent size, but a really sad depressing feeling in the air there. I already have enough societal burden being a white american male.. I don't need any extra societal guilt.
Shimonseki was alright.. wish I'd taken the boat to Fukuoka instead however, as I've heard only amazing comments about it.
How would you compare KOBE or SAPPORO or even FUKUOKA to those who have been there? (or even if you haven't been there)? Also, what are others impressions of Tokyo vs. Osaka compared to other places? |

The taiwan option is looking good right now..Not definite, but a whole change from Korea would probably do me the power of good...
Any lowdown on the best areas? i have a couple of offers already. preference: a town/ city with good times/ nightlife, and not too far from some countryside. |

What is it about Fukuoka? It is affordable and easy to walk everywhere with plenty of bars and such? Just curious..
Also, how does Kobe rate? Anyone been there? In a city like this, do you have subways or other things, can you walk everywhere fairly easily?
After this contact, I definetely need to get away from Seoul for awhile. Japan or Taiwan would both be alright. |

I spoke to someone who spent time in fukuoka before- he said the women were just mindblowing there, nightlife great, social life etc.
As i said before, the only real thing keeping a lot of male teachers in japan is the women, by all accounts- a lot of no -strings fun to be had.
I don't think they save as much as Korea, for example.. |

Fukouka might be cool because
1) its very close to Korea.. cheap ferry to get there.
2) Probably rent, cost of living, and minimal 'transportation costs' to get places is quite low, meaning you are capable of saving more than the major cities of Japan.
3) It sounds fun. As cheap as Korea is, I'm about a 8000 won cab ride home, and this bar-hopping in Seoul is starting to drain me as well. Maybe a smaller Japanese town where everything is convenintly located it starting to sound more and more appealing. |

For me, it's as simple as I have friends in the area.
Though I do admit that the ladies are all.... very nice to you. If a guy with a face like mine can get offers to dance (The whole sad story of my being asked to dance can be read here: http://www.thepersonunderthestairs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=217 )then it means that you guys might get lucky too.

| I don't think I've ever heard anyone say anything bad about Fukuoka. I'll have to check it out. Ditto with Kobe though, universally positive stuff although I haven't heard quite as much about it. |

My Dad was a regular visitor there when he was a merchant marine. He loved it!!! (my dad is a bit of a racist  but he will never say anything bad about the Japanese. I think he got laid alot there  )
Anyway, as far as ex pats living in Japan, after Tokyo, the most popular places for people to live in would be Osaka, Kobe and Fukuoka.
The only problem with Kobe is that most of the Yakuza are based there. They usually don't bother the foreigners if you don't bother them.
In Kyushu, Kitakyushu has become a Bogota style gangland warground (not to the same extent but quite a few people have been murdered in bar explosions and gun fights)
I would avoid that area right now  |

Sounds interesting.. just curious.. how does Fukuoka and Kobe compare with places like Osaka and Kyoto? (Like city layout, population-wise, foreigner community, etc)? I know what Osaka and Kyoto look like.. just curious if Kobe & Fukuoka are somewhat similar in appearance, etc.? (By the way, I thought Osaka was pretty cool, I didn't like Kyoto so much at all however - I mean with the idea of potentially living there). |

Bit too lit off the free wine for Chusok now, but, send me a PM with Questions about Japan. Although my month was only in Tokyo, I can give you an uncensored version of what I think is the coolest city in the world.
All the Yakuza winters in Shikkoku. Matsuyama massive represent.

Hmm.. checking out cities in Japan, and this page is pretty good.. well, looking at population and density.. I kind of want a manageable city to get around in, and have a very urban feel..

This has some stats.. and Kawasaki looks pretty ideal for me. Small but lots of people!! Fukuoka isn't too bad either, better than the other smaller cities, at least density-wise. I love convenience of dense places, but don't like major tranportation time to get around them like major cities.
Anyhow, know about Kawasaki? Also, curious about more first-hand experience of Kobe and Fukuoka.
Also, was reading there are tons of Brazilians and quite a few Filipinas (two of my most favorite groups of people!).. where do most of them live? What cities? |

In Aichi prefecture there are TONS of Brazilians.
However, they tend to live in the smaller factory towns close to their work. |

| I am slightly curious...to all those that have jumped ship or are planning to jump ship to Japan from Korea soon...would you say it has more to do with the fact that you are just sick of Korea and need a change or would you honestly say that Japan is just a better place to live overall while you are still young (aside from earning potential)? |
