I am a UK citizen. Can I get a visa on arrival in China, or do I need one before I enter the country? How much does it cost? I am going there STRICTLY as a tourist.

Doesn't matter where you are from, you have to get a visa before you enter the country.
Do a search - I explained it very thoroughly in a thread in the travel forum.. |

You don't need a visa if you are only going to Hong Kong or Macau. If you're going anywhere else, you need a visa from the embassy before you leave. |

Some people would stop in Hong Kong or any of the other SEZ in China and get a visa for the mainland, except they stopped issuing them in Shenzhen..... |
