Interestingly, if you speak to Vietnamese about the Koreans who fought in Vietnam, they refer to these Koreans as "mercenaries" or "soldiers of fortune."
There was quite good pay to be had for serving in Vietnam, both for the Korean military junta that ran the country and for the soldiers who "volunteered" to go there.
But of course the Koreans who went to Vietnam were only concerned about helping out a neighbor in the great struggle against communism. |

Clinton didnt bother to send troops to Rwanda, which was much graver than Somalia, after the debacle in Magadishu. |
My point exactly, if it was strictly "to be a nice guy" he would have sent troops to mOgadishu, but instead to samalia.
He had more to gain. |
Do you even know what you are talking about? |
Mogadish is the capital of Somalia |
Sorry, I meant to say Rwanda. |

That was the best soap drama I've seen a long time.
Do you know why American couldn't win in Vietnam and why can't win in Iraq ? Because your country have that kind generals who is so sentimental and weak , Korean generals will never show tears in front TV.

Miss Seoul, this is the first time i have really disagreed with your comments. have you ever stopped to realize, that the US commits more soldiers and money, every year to your country's security, than your country has committed to other countries in their entire existence?
If 30,000 Koreans died for another country, and 30,000 (at times almost twice that) were stationed in that country, and billions of dollars were given to that country to ensure their economic success, and they thanked you by burning your flag, rioting against your country's evil nature, and elected a president because he trashed your country, would it possible for you to shed a tear? |
First I am a pro-America/American and I hate to see Anti-Americanism in Korea, however we shouldn't forget that the principal of U.S policy is " America does what is the best for America/American and if their interest doesn't meet, it doesn't matter it's Korea/Iraq/Somali, America will not do anything, so you shouldn't tell me that America came to Korea during Korean war for just Korean, we have to see what was America's interest on Korea at the time "
Can you tell me that America invaded Iraq for Iraqies, George Bush used to say that, what a joke ! " |
when has korea ever sent troops or spent money for reasons that do not benefit themselves?
you know, if someone bushed me out of the way of an oncoming truck, saving my life, but did it because it helped them, i would still owe them my life...
the sad fact is, South Korea owes its existence to the US and our soldiers that died here or are guarding your walls. and you wouldnt be living in the US have a nice comfortable life if our soldiers didnt make that sacrifice. you would have either starved to death or be collecting grass to bowl and eat, living in the stone age and worshipping Kim Jong Il.
I wonder, do the Japanese, British, Norwegians, French, Germans, Belgians, Dutch, Danish, Italians, Greeks, Turks, and Luxoumbergers all hate America for giving billions of dollars to their country to pull those countries out of ruin? yes, it served america because rich countries do not risk war, so making countries rich stabilizes the world.
but crap, who really gained more from the Korean War? all the Koreans that will live to be 80 and have electricity, modern health care, advnanced education and modern industry? or the americans that benefited by slowing the communist advance in asia?
i am sure the korea war helped us win the Cold War, but what would south korea look like if America didnt save it?
When will Koreans pull their heads out of their ars and just say "thank you" instead of "you are only greedy?"
and you wonder why the General cries... |

I think the americans in the vietnam war were faced with a determined enemy as like in Iraq. My old man fought with the americans in Vietnam, he said that the american soldiers were being slaughtered.
I feel sadness to the thousands of american soldiers who have lost their lives for the sake of "freedom" as Bush calls it. I'm from New Zealand and many from home disagree with the US adminstration but with respect to the americans, in history the US helped us when the Japanese were close to our shores..
I think Koreans need to be thankful that the americans helped them out even if the US forces only fight for selffish reasons. Also, Korea wouldnt be in the top 10 wealthiest countires in OECD not without substancial investment from the the US.
Cheers

When I was telling people I was going to Korea they asked me if I was going to North or South Korea. Heck, some people might not know where Alabama is on the map. I wish I could see some U.S. outrage and awareness about how some American citizens are sometimes treated.
The media and embassy and the powers that be are not doing much about it. And for all those who talk about insulting the troops doesn't demeaning Americans insult the troops who are defending the country.
Anyway, most Koreans are pretty cool people, and I like many of them a lot. |

MissSeoul, this is a retarded post.
Hah! Your generals couldn't even hold off the North and Japan went totally midieval on your asses and you want tot alk about superior Generals. America didn't fare to well in Vietnam, but it wasnt for that, it was because the admisntration at the time tried to micromanage the war.
Our 29,000 troops are also the only thing which has allowed your nation tod evelop this far, without us Im sure in the 70s when North Korea was at the hieght of its power, theyd have reinvaded you. |

I concur with NAVFC. As Pat Saychek would say, "Buy a vowel and get a clue."
My father served two TDY's in Vietnam ('63-'64 and '73-'74) and by and large what he saw from the average grunt totally contradicts that statement. |

South Korea and war? If you read history, and I don't know what history you read Seoul, you will know that the North Koreans were smashing the South Korean lines like a knife going through butter. If the U.S. did not intervene Korea would have surrendered in less than a month. I am not exaggerating. Kim Il Sung wanted to take the South in less than a month and what stopped him was American intervention. Both Iraq and Vietnam wars were essentially wars that many Americans later felt were unecessary, and they were deceived, they felt, by their leadership. Also, the War in Iraq was started on the cheap instead of committing a large amount of troops which was done in Europe and the Pacific and Korea people in the White House were too arrogant and wanted more troops when the situation out of control. That is not the fault of the generals.
The generals asked for more support and better armour. They didn't get it. The soldiers and generals did not fail in Iraq, the White House did.
There is still a chance to make a success out of it, but it will be very hard to do that. |

Not so fast. Where's your proof that the war was waged cheaply? It went into cost overruns well before a midcourse correction was called for. The generals in the field did NOT ask for more troops; it was the big brass stateside that had major reservations about troop numbers. Rumsfeld followed an untried approach that proved inadequate. To the extent that he was dogged, you might argue he was also arrogant. Rather than point the finger of blame at the administration, how about the abetters like al-Qaeda, Syria, and Iran? And what of the insurgency? Those in the field were at most guilty of underestimating their tenacity. |

The Korean Marines in Viet Nam were first rate troops. As an American friend who served with the US Marines in Viet Nam said they were some of the toughest people he had ever met.
They were the ones that started the idea of collecting ears. |

Interestingly enough history also states that the North Koreans were well armed and equipped by China and Russia. (or did you not read that part of history)?
The South Korean army was not much more than a bunch of lightly armed forces lacking in armor and artillery (or did you not read that part of history)? They didn't even have tanks.
Plus the North Korean force outnumbered the South Korean force by more than 2 to 1. (135000 against 65000) |
