Human attraction on second thought

LONDON, England (Reuters) -- Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, but other people's opinions matter too when it comes to the attraction between men and women, according to researchers.

They found women are more attracted to a man if other women like him too.

"We tend to think about things like attraction as reflecting a private decision or a personal choice but our work shows that people's attractiveness judgments can be influenced in pronounced ways by what other people appear to think of those individuals," said psychologist Dr. Ben Jones.

Jones, of the University of Aberdeen, and his team tested the impact of the opinions of others by giving women a test in which they had to choose the more attractive of pairs of male faces and to rate how much more handsome they found them.

[I wish I could for just 10 days read women's minds like Mel Gibson did.
Actually, it could be bad. Who knows?

I've seen an example of that phenomenon...but taken to the absolute max!

I went to an all-boys school and in our final year this new bloke arrived. He looked like a complete nerd (imagine Shane McGowan from The Pogues but shorter and with glasses that had lenses like the bottoms of milk bottles).

He got a lot of teasing at first but he always took it in such good humour that people began to like him and he ended up pretty popular. It also turned out that he had quite a good sense of humour in a dry kind of way. Unfortunately for him tho', women always found him repellant until....

...a few of us (including him) ended up studying science at university together. More or less as a joke, right from the beginning, we started telling everyone that when he was in school with us he was known as a babe magnet, always having stunning looking girlfriends.

Much to our surprise, word soon spread and what had started as fiction became accepted as fact and in fact became fact, if you know what I mean (...ok what I mean is he became a babe magnet in college). So much so that some of the guys who had spread the rumour became jealous and started to tell the truth......too late tho', it had become too well established and no one believed them. Cool

ie. Perception is more important than reality.

Politicians, especially right wing American politicians lately, have known this for years. Sean Hannity comes to mind. So have horny American teenage boys with access to daddy's checkbook when it comes to buying red cars.

Thank God for those researchers. It's kind of ironic that if you have a girlfriend/wife you are more attractive to other women.

Guys do not think, "wow, she's got a man, I like her even more now"
