None of the rabbid dogs on this thread have improved conditions for ESL teachers with their repeated, vicious barking. [/quote]
I had a hunting dog named Rocky. Rocky was good when it came to hunting rabbids. |

Or in the case of the government, they legislate around you. |

Those are the tactics that my dog Rocky employed to flush out the rabbids. |

That is the irony of being a citizen of the so-called "superpower", they profess to be "all-knowing" and "all-powerful", but when it comes to protecting their citizens from unfair practices overseas, they tend to turn a cold shoulder to it.
At least the Prime Minister of New Zealand, supposedly one of the poorest English-speaking countries, came to Korea to lobby the Korean government to allow their citizens the right to get E2 visas (thus, ending the "no 3-year degree" rule at immigrations).
I would bet that if Korea was to reduce the 6-month visa rule for Canadians, I would win because you can almost certainly count on Canada to retaliate by reducing the visas for Koreans entering the country.
If you want some action about the practices done in Korea, contact your congressperson (try to find one who is part of a congressional committee) and tell them about your problems, the US embassy is useless unless you are a serviceman, then they will take good care of you.....sad, right? |
The thing is, visas are an issue which your government can help with, in general terms, but not for individuals. The "no three year degree" thing necessitated intervention by a foreign government, as would your hypothetical 6 month visa for Canadians, as these are actions of the Korean government.
Korean business owners screwing around their employees is a different issue altogether, one that your own government cannot help with and, quite rightly, has no interest in. |

Without wanting to be unfriendly, I have to say that this is one of the silliest and most amusing things I've ever read on this board.
It's so charmingly earnest and indignant. Please don't take this personally but what makes you think that American government officials would have the slightest interest in bothering their Korean counterparts about this?
1. It's really not within their remit
2. The petty (though admitedly legitimate at times) gripes of a collection of English teachers is simply of little or no interest to anyone but the teachers themselves.
What was it you proposed to do if you don't get the support you're asking for? Alert the media? Again, I can't help but wonder what leads you to imagine that anyone would be interested? As others have pointed out, there are rather more compelling instances of suffering and hardship to be discussed. In a sane world, (admittedly, we may not live in one) surely late severance pay or even.....gasp....no severance pay at all for a small group of American workers on the other side of the world is highly unlikely to provoke public outrage.
Right, I've already said too much. Again, I don't intend this as a personal attack. What I really should be saying is thanks. You made gave my colleague and me a nice chuckle.
By the way, in case it's of interest, I taught in Korea for a couple of years a couple of years ago and now work as a government consultant, making me reasonably well-qualified to comment on all of this, I suppose.
In any case, good luck with the campaign.
Cheers |
