My recruiter says that housing deposits are part of EPIK contracts and they won't remove the housing deposit clause.
Does anyone have any experience with this>?? Has anyone had a housing deposit clause removed from a EPIK contract.
Also, when do you get the housing deposit back??? at the end of the contract? What happens if I don't complete for any reason????
Also, contract sais I am responsible for all expenses incured in using the apartment (not exact wording). Does this mean I am responsible for breakdowns in old appliances, fittings, water pipes etc. The ondol system broke twice in my last old apartment and the concrete floors had to be dug up and new pipes fitted.
Sorry, I don't have the exact wording/contract here now. I'm on my CELTA course and working from 6a - midnight.
Cheers, |

Some provinces it seems, yes, they want a deposit, others dont. Good luck getting a govt contract altered, likely aint gonna happen.
I'm in Gangwondo which recently did a major expansion of its program. No deposits. They shelled out up to 5 million won to furnish each new recruit's place. Trust prevails, until some idiot leaves a place trashed, then all bets are off.
In all likelihood you'd see your deposit fairly recompensed near the time of your departure. I think epik is honest that way. |

Just say no.
The contract will not be altered, in all probability, but do you really want to work for a place that puts an illegal penalty clause into the contract.
It sets the stage for how you are to be treated.
For all the apologist out there, there is ample legal means for schools to recover money if legitimate damage is done to the flat where the foreign teacher resided (remember they are Korean, you are not). The Republic of Korea denies exit to foreigners who are involved in civil suits.
The difference is without a housing deposit (penalty clause) in the contract, there must be some kind of due process. With a housing deposit, you are at the whim of whoever is administrating your contract. |

I considered a Gimhae contract. I turned it down (but not because of the deposit).
I was told by the administrator there that the deposit would be 10% of my first paycheck which worked out to be about two hundred bucks. Grumble, grumble but are you gonna nix the contract for two hundred bucks? |

Yep. I don't care if it is 200 dollars or 500 Won, if your prospective employer is trying to screw you before you even start working, that tells me to look elsewhere. |

It's not legal if you refuse. |

You can trust EPIK to pay it back. Just think of it as savings. |
