Hey, I'm looking for the best/cheapest way to send stuff back to the US.

I have about 100 lbs of personal belongings. UPS quoted me $630.00 but that's way more than I want to spend.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

Check your local post office. They offer shipping, complete with boxes, at reasonable rates.

Check with the airlines - they have rates for luggage only that may be cheaper. See if you can find an airline that services both Korea and an airport close to your home.

Hongkong airport has a whole system set up with the airlines to transport baggage / boxes home to the U.S. by themselves.

If you are not in a hurry sending these things by postal service and sea is the least expensive.

Go to the post office and say you want to ship the stuff.

Use the word "선편" and you should be fine.

20 kilos is the max per box. The price at this weight is 48,000 won.

The exact price I have for sending stuff to the US according to the local PO. is 21,000won per kilo, 27,700 for 2 kgs, 130 kgs for 15 kgs. 193,800 won for 20 kgs.

I too would like to find cheaper rates.

Had to abandon 20 kgs of luggage due to excess baggage and Qantas trying to charge $800 to take it onboard our flight to Korea. Had it posted to Australia for a fraction of the price with the intention of bringing it back to Korea on my next Oeania flight.

I'd double check those prices if I were you. What you're quoting are airmail prices. Surface mail is 48000won for 20kg.

I asked my wife about that and this was what she was given on paper. However as you know , Koreans will say anything to turn a profit or just keep plain quiet about cheaper alternatives.

Will check this out come monday.

Thanks for the info.

I've always shipped Christmas gifts and stuff home by surface mail through Korea Post. I've never paid over 40,000 Won for the biggest box they have and it gets there in about a month.

Admittedly, the Korean post office doesn't necessarily like to admit that they can send stuff cheaply, but as I mentioned, if you say "선편" you will get the rate I mentioned above. I just sent 6 20 kilo boxes home for a total of just under 300,000 won total.

If they don't give you that rate, you're not saying "선편".

In theory, it takes 2-3 months, maybe 4. You sent them during a busy time (the holidays), so I'd expect it to be closer to the max.

Yes, they will, BUT there are size restrictions. I don't remember them.

You can insure it when you send it. Just tell them you want insurance and the value to be insured. It will cost extra, naturally.

However, you might want to check your countries customs website to see if you will be charged money for shipping in back. If you bring it home on the plane with you, you don't have to worry about customs.
