My job is sending me to a conference in Barcelona next month. I'm going to be there for a week, and will probably have alot of free time in the evenings. I'm looking for suggestions and ideas of what to do in the city while I'm there.

Has anyone been there and can give me some cool tips?

Walking on the pedestrian mall- La Rambla
Picasso Musuem
La Sagrada Familia- Gaudi's monsterous unfinshed Gothis spires
Gaudi Park-Park Guell
walking around the Barri Gotic- the Gothic Bario

Montjuic- a hill to the south which has-
the Olympic Stadium of 1992, where the archer shot a flaming arrow to light the torch.

the Bus Turistic- Tourist Bus- goes everywhere you'd want to go, but Barcelona is a walking town if you get the chance.

Not sure about Barcelona, but if you can get down to the island of Palma de Mallorca and Palma de Nova...you'll have a great time. Ibiza is another kick ass island that you'll never regret going to. They have the coolest bars (in a cave!! With those things that hang down that look like icicles, forget what they're called)

I'm so Jealous! Barcelona is one of my fav places. I also agree with the previous posters, check out the gaudi works....Sagrada Familia, Casa Mila, Parc Guiell. My mom is not big into architecutre but a lot of the houses had audio tours which were very interesting for her. La Ramblas was one of my other favorite things there, check out the market about halfway up. Walk along the beach. If you have a day free check out mont serrat (a monestary and beautiful view) or Figuerres (Dali museum). Let me know if you need someone to go in your place.

Good that you're going to Barca =). I used to live in Spain, and loved it.

Do watch out for the theives there. They smell easy prey (Americans/Canadians) especially in Las Ramblas. I went there with some American friends I had just met, and we were chillin near the Colombus statue (You'll know which one), and these arabs came by and were throwing a fast one. Luckily we caught it on time and they weren't able to nick anything from us.

There's a nice port off of las Ramblas which has clubs and bars. You're gonna have fun for a few days.

Here's a question for Canadians: Why do you feel the urge to have a backpack/baseball cap/ sweatshirt that has a big Canadian flag on it? I mean, I understand for pride reasons, but you are so easy prey for thieves and beggars.

Barcelona is great! As mentioned before the tourista buses take you all over. I think they stop at 9PM or 9:30PM. There is a red one and a blue one. I also agree you can walk all over.

If you have a car, a drive up the coast to Costa Brava is excellent. Even in the winter, beach restaurants are open and the fish soup is great. And the air is refreshing.

Have a nice time, I think you will enjoy it.

Spain is fantastic. I agree with all previous suggestions. Stop by a random tapas place around 8 or 9 and just hang out. I had plenty of company and conversations (my horrible espangnol not withstanding).

On the question about why Canucks wear the maple leaf: Not all of us do. Actually very few of us do. I would say that its on the same level as Aussies and Kiwis, but we are the stereotype and a big red leaf is attention grabbing. However, I was living in Europe during the lead up to the Iraq war and I put a small maple leaf on my bag when I travelled to a new place because I just didn't want the problems that were associated with people thinking I was American. Those problems weren't justified, but after my 50th political debate and defence of ordinary Americans I decided I'd rather be fainting over beautiful art than dealing with jerks. Even the American Embassy was urging Americans to adopt the maple leaf and many of my friends did.

I think many people wear the maple leaf because it is inherently unthreatening. It almost says, "Hey, no trouble from me!" But I agree it can also say, "Please pickpocket my FOTB a$$".

One of my favorite cities in the world. Get the tourist bus pass. It runs in two circles, a north and a south. They meet at the bottom and top respectively. You can get off and check it all out, and then another one will come along soon enough.
The south line is pretty walkable, so maybe just get the one day pass and check out the North as it is spread out.
If you got a free day, head down to Citges. Its only 30km drive south of Barcelona and its where the posh go hang out on the weekend.
It is a great city, but dont stray to far off of LasRamblas....petty theif is common and only three or four blocks off the south part is a pretty rough hood.
