E-dong is where the rich folk live, kind of up in the foothills with their own private emart and vietmanese restaurant. Pohang isnt that bad, there are worse places. If you just get out of town a bit you can find some pretty nice uncrowded beaches

Tell hubby that if he wants the prettiest drive in Korea, to drive down the highway south of Pohang...up and around the little thumb that sticks up and then down along the coast. Mountains on the right, beach on the left. Truly a beautiful drive.

Suggestion: Stop and turn around before you get to Ulsan.

PS: There is an ajuma down at Kampo who will give you the key to her restaurant so you can stay and drink soju till you are cross-eyed as long as you lock up for her and leave the key. Very Happy

Maybe the "Life in Pohang" thread on the FAQ forum can help. It's got 30 pages.

I live in Pohang (actually in Heunghae, a ten-minute drive from downtown). I'm visiting the States right now (back in about three weeks), but feel free to contact me.

I know you, don't I? You are the guy who runs this other website that, sadly, isn't really active...

Thanks, that's what I wanted to know. Not necessarily going to live in E-dong, but I should imagine that the whole Nam-gu is pretty decent to live in, since E-dong is in Nam-gu...?

Not really a website; just a discussion board. It was nice while it lasted.

Not quite. The place I lived in was in Nam-gu. It wasn't so flash. POSCO and INI Steel are in Nam-gu, as are alot of the attendent factory worker residential areas. From what I saw, It didn't appear to be the most affluent area. The area up around POSTECH seemed pretty nice, but I'm pretty sure that was in Buk-gu. The impression I got while living there (Bluelake will probably be able to confirm/deny this having both longer term and more recent experience than me) is that Nam-gu was more the industrial half of the city while Buk-gu was the commercial half, with the types of residential areas you would expect to go along with them.

This impression is obviously influenced by having lived in Dogu, home of the world's most horrendous red-light district (straddling the top of the road into town no less), a beach your boss warns you will give you skin diseases and of course, Pohang airport (whose runway is more or less aligned with the one road through town).

Things may have changed since 2004 of course.

I don't think things have changed all that much in that time (although we will now have an Outback!). I rarely get around the city much, so I mostly visit the Yookgeori area when I go (lack of time for much else).

Jigok, just down the road from E-dong (but further away from downtown) is quite nice with lots of parks and gardens and I think the uni campus there is PosTech? I used to work in E-dong and was amazed, almost on a daily basis, at the amount of construction going on and buildings seemingly popping up almost over night. People say I wouldn't recognise the place now (I left Pohang in 2002). But yeah, I hear it's now the new posh part of Pohang whereas it used to be Jigok.
