Its 4:30 am sunday as i am writing this.
I live in a 4 story villa. About 2 hours ago i woke up to smoke in my apt. I thought something was on fire in my room.
So i open my apt door and there is smoke filled in the stairwell.. i can hardly see. It took me about 20 seconds to grab my stuff and get out of the building.
I called my girlfriend and she called the fire dept. During which time i go back into the building to alert people to get out of their apts. Next thing i hear a women screaming. I go up to the 2nd floor and see where the smoke is comming from. The lady points to the door and i use my shirt to grab the door handle to try and open it.. sure enough it opens up and i see the stove on fire. Dont ask me why i risked my life in this situation, but i guess it was just pure reaction.
Anyway, i run over to the main gas line and shut it off.. then over to the stove and shut off the two gas burners.. Then turn on the water taps to put out the fire aroudn the stove. Next what do i see?
i run over to the main bedroom and here is ajjoshii sleeping in bed.. i try to wake him up and come to find out he's pissed drunk from soju.... hardly coherent he doesnt understand what or why i am even in his apt.. meanwhile some other people come out of their apts to find out whats going on.. but no one offers to help.
At this point i decide its to time high tail it out of the buiding in fear of a gas explosion.
30 minutes later the police and fire come. The fire dept goes up to the 2nd floor and investigates.. they dont even try to evacuate the building. They are there for 20 minutes. I cant believe the lack of attention the fire and police officers have. Not only do they leave after a short time but they dont even wake up the drunken ajjushii in the apt where the fire came from. The smoke alone was near toxic.. i could hardly breath.
Evidentally upon turning off the gas stoves the drunken man must have decided to make some late night ramien and passed out on his bed, leaving the two gas burners on..
LOL.. What surprises me about this situation is that the police did nothing to the drunken guy.. they didnt even try to wake him. The fire dept just looked in and did a quick inspection and noticed the fire was out . Not to mention there was a ton of smoke in the building.. the smell from the smoke was really bad.. so much to the point i could hardly breathe..
If i had not turned off that gas stove in time my apt would have been up in flames and the drunken guy would have been dead. The flames burnt the two pots to a near crisp and they were almost touching the exhaust fans above.
This one take the hat.. The gf and i decide to leave the apt for a couple of hours after the fire because the smoke was so bad we couldnt breath and the smell was terrible. We get home about 430 am this morning and we hear sounds from the apt where the fire came from. We are thinking the drunken guy is at it again cooking ramien.. knock on the door and his wife answers. The gf asks the wife if everything is ok. The wife apparantely had no idea what happened as she just got in the door 30 minutes before we arrived. Wife said she just got in the door and could smell something burnt around the stove and said her husband is in bed drunk and figured he decided to make something to eat before he went to sleep.. little did she know he fell asleep with the stove on.
What a joke.. It cracks me up that the police and fire dept did nothing to the man in bed.. hell they didnt even wake him up for questioning.
USELESS!! Oh and by the way if you dial 119 you will not get english service.. at least i didnt when i called them.
LESSON ----> I will NEVER repeat what i did . Never will i risk my life for anyone in this country again. Its not worth it, especially when the fire and police dont take the proper actions.
NEVER AGAIN!! |

You showed a lot of courage - do it again if the circumstances call for a guy like you to save the day.
Word.
Way-to-go is the way I see you, eh.
Let's face it: Guys with sack like you are rare in this world. Do not stop being you because we need more ballsy people, eh.
Thanks for being you.

You had me right until your ending "Lesson".
Yeah, the authorites suck. But you did the right thing.
Our school recently took our kids to the Seoul Civic Safety Center where they learned about earthquake safety, how to escape from a smoke-filled building, how to put out a fire with an extinguisher, etc. That last one was a hoot - especially since no home has one, and I've never seen one for sale anywhere. I really would like to have on in my apt.... |

In a country where the police and fire department are as useless as the knobs you described, we need people who buck the trend and risk their lives. I applaud you for what you did! Please don't throw in the towel, as that incident proves how badly common sense and courage are needed. |

Then go home with him for some late-night ramyeon. Keep him awake during the cooking process. |

That's true, but if my boyfriend put his life on the line to save a stranger, when the cops and firefighters are getting PAID to put their lives on the line, I'd be pissed. Hey, idiots, if you don't want to risk your life, don't be a cop or a firefighter. It's YOUR job, not someone else's. It's nice to be a hero, but heroes die more often than not. |
