Quote:
BAGHDAD, IRAQ On one of the deadliest days for the U.S. military since the Iraq war began, an American helicopter crashed in a Sunni area north of Baghdad on Saturday, killing all 13 aboard, the U.S. military said. Iraqi officials in the area said it had been shot down, though there was no immediate confirmation from American officials.

Elsewhere, five U.S. soldiers were killed and three wounded in a battle with gunmen who attacked the local governor's office in the Shiite holy city of Karbala, and two soldiers died from other attacks, military officials said.

Twenty U.S. troops died Saturday, the third deadliest day for U.S. service members. On Jan. 26, 2005, the worst day of the war for American forces, 37 troops died, 31 when a Marine helicopter crashed in the western desert, and six others in combat.

The second highest toll was 28 deaths, on the third day of the U.S. invasion.

I remember John Kerry saying (perhaps it wasn't him?) "How do you ask a man, to be the last man, to die for a lost cause?".

A few more days like that and Mr Bush is going to have to cut and run. Americans love winning wars, but lately seemingly not at the expense of their troops.

A whole 20! About 1/100 of the fatalities on a holiday weekend. WooEeee! At the rate of fatal auto accidents in the US, the war in Iraq would have to last another 50 years to catch up with 2006 alone. That would mean no fatalities after Jan 1 this.

I am not an American, but I a very much pro-American and I like Bush. He screws up from time to time. So does everyone.

My solution would be to remove most of the US troops to Afghanistan and the Kurd area, then sit back and watch. Let the Shi'ites have a little pay-back. They deserve it.

I don't think this is an accurate reflection of how most Americans think. I think the key is 'waste'. I don't think Americans (any more than any other country) like the idea of wasting the lives of troops in a cause that is not very desirable.

No need to go back over all the arguments against the war, but I think it has always been clear that the war was never very popular (strongly supported). A fair number of people who supported the war in the beginning were doing it out of a sense of obligation to support the president. They weren't sure he was right but went along simply because he was president.

I think it is sad to read about these 20 men who died. Of course, I feel for the Iraqis dying as well. Yes, far more people die in car accidents, but going to war was not an accident it was the work of a government think it had to spin things in a certain way on the international scene and justify invading Iraq by preying on the fear and anger in American society after 9/11. I do not like Bush, but I do like the troops, and I feel for their families. A main reason I don't like Bush is because he got out of fighting in Vietnam in a war started by LBJ who manufactured a reason to go to war there and now he is doing the same. Now, if he planned this out carefully then he would have been viewed as a brilliant leader. The Sunni Arabs are very, very angry at the Shiite led government. The government really has made a mess.

Family friend's son is in Delta Force. The one time he is a little fearful for his life is when he's in a helicopter.

He also thinks that it won't matter if we leave in 5 weeks, 5 months, 5 years, or 50 years: the sunni and shia will have a bloodbath when we leave.

It would take a full year of these to equal one day on Tarawa. Helicopters and by nature unsafe.

adventurer:

That was a good example of your convoluted logic. Iraq was an artificial construct in the fitst place and was held together by terror and force. bucheon bum is correct on both issues.

The US should withdraw from Iraq except for a few secure bases and Kurdistan and Basra, just to p1ss the Iranians off and let them kill each other off. I would rather have them doing it over there than over hear. It keeps the fools occupied and in the middle ages.

Agree. I don't want to overhear a damn thing about that war.

It might give me one of them icky feelings.

Not to mention, if we keep spreading the violence around, it won't come to us.

Come on and stir it up...

Wow. We really are going to kill ourselves off. I wonder if people really feel like this, or just like to stir the pot.

Humanity... What an amazing oxymoron that word has become in and of itself.

oops! Bad spelling. hear ~ here. mi an hamnida.

I feel that way. I am a Canadian (sort of) and loved to visit the US. Because of age and recial profiling I often didn't ven get asked my name at the border. Since 9/11 it has become a pain in the rear.

I know al Qeada had nothing to do with the Iraq. They are a different bunch of Islamofascists.

Complaints about inhumanity should go to them.
