Of course we're here for the low-taxed money, money, money!!! Why else would we be putting up with the daily crap and muck of hogwans?
If I put more weight on the educational factor than the money, I sure as shite wouldn't be teaching in this joke of an industry, I'd be back in Canuckistan at a REAL school feeling oh so good about the 200 papers I spent all weekend grading, getting docked 25% of my pay, and wondering if I'm going to finally get permanence after years of B.Stty contracts.

It's fine to be here for the money, but then one is not a teacher but a mercenary. That is what I mean. |

T.U.M, Mercenary?!!! Saving 2,500 bucks a month for doing my job is not mercenary, it's simply good personal financial planning or do you not believe in that either?

Canadians are supposed to be socialist, apologetic and compliant.
Urban Myth, if you want nothing but idealist dreamsers, you'd make a great hagwon owner.

To Canuck. You SAVE 2500 bucks a month? Really? After taxes, expenses, and utilities? You must be a heck of a financial planner. I work 2 jobs and I don't SAVE that much.
To the MKATM. In order to be a teacher, should a person not enjoy teaching or at least like kids? If a person is only in it for the money and nothing else, I don't think that they can call themselves a teacher in any real sense of the word. |

And your condemnation of said teachers is valid for what exact reason? |

Urban Myth, I happen to get paid more than they average bear and spend very little outside of immediate needs. "Expenses" is the operative word here. My condolences about your two jobs.
I enjoy my teaching job (as it is my chosen profession) and I get paid well for it and I don't piss my money away.

I'm canadian, and I may be a socialist, but I make no apologies and I am by no means compliant. Anybody who complains about playing with kids all day, teaching or not being able to save enough money, should go back to Canada and try working as a teacher for close to minimum wage, pay over 22% in taxes AND their own room and board as well. We'll see how much money you save after that, if you have any left.
I have a 6 yr old daughter I haven't seen in a couple of months, nor will I see for another year, because my own country won't pay me enough to survive and pay child support in the profession I choose, and I'm an IT pro. You would think that pays good money and it does, AS LONG AS I DON'T WORK IN NORTH AMERICA.
The country we all call home is a police state (thanks to the USA) and ain't as free as we all brag about. I don't see cops here with guns, and last night, I saw some dude picking a fight with a cop. In Canada, I wouldn't even get a chance to open my mouth before being tossed in the can. Compliants about business practices in Korea is one thing, but to complain about living and making money in Korea? If you don't like it, go home. |

Try dealing with Pequiste teaching unions. You're not going anywhere in that system unless you're a certified card-carrying P.Q. separatist. And they count the photocopies you make these days. Poor little "maudit Anglais" me. They never let me teach my other major, history. As I was told: "You'd probably give the kids federalist ideas." If you thought the Soviet Union during the communist era skewed their history books, well then you've never poked your nose into a Quebecois one.
Being from the socialist haven of Quebec, I figured out that to save the same amount of money back home every month as I do here, I'd have to be either a Superior Court judge or a Hell's Angel.
Korea is allowing me to accomplish financial goals in 1/4 of the time it would have taken me back home. And I should somehow be ashamed of this? Or somehow it makes me a lousy, uninterested teacher? BWA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA
Can't wait to go home and settle back into my PAID-OFF REAL ESTATE.
Then I'll be more than happy to be pillaged for most of my disposable income once again.

You might want to check the forum rules about flaming members. And don't worry about my two jobs. I am quite well compensated for it. What does "I get paid more then they average bear" mean? And what is "reconcile"? |

You're teaching and you don't get that, high intelligence guy? In the first sentence, high iq guy, "they" is obviously a typo for "the" which can easily be passed over becasue "they" is a word. You just did it yourself, because you asked what "they average bear" means, stupid. I don't have the inclination to break out the red pen and its Gord's modus operandi anyway. You're smrt Smrt S-M-R-T.
Do you also need someone to explain what modus operandi means? I can see why if you're from Ontario the provincial government pressed so hard for standardized testing-how did you make it out of grade 11, let alone university?
You don't know what reconcile means? I guess you'll have to reconcile the fact that even though you're not in it for the money yet you are also not a real teacher.

Urban Myth, forgive my snappiness. I tend to get riled when people don't make sense. Your response didn't disappoint.
I don't worry about your two jobs despite the high probability that one of them is illegal.
Could it be you're doing it for the extra MONEY?
Or is it only for those high-minded ideals of the love of teaching?
Curious for someone trying to claim the moral high ground.
While you seem unable to reconcile my teaching intentions with my fiscal motives, may I suggest you take some of that extra money you're making and buy yourself a dictionary?
In the mean time you can look "reconcile" up:
