Well, last night I was lured (by trailers featuring the rather compelling Rufus Sewell) into watching The Taming of the Shrew (part of the BBCs series Retelling Shakespeare). Part way through, Rufus dresses up in drag...and manages to still look rather fetching! His make up was actually quite tastefully done, and he didn't look very girlish at all.
For those unfamiliar with Rufus, here's a picture (minus the drag):
Then today, I read that mascara for men is being sold on the London High Street.

You have to use both hands, hold steady and brush up. You can't do it with your mouth shut. It's like applying glue to your eyes. That's why women flutter their eyelids. If they don't, their eyes will get stuck shut.

Before, I might have been a little cynical, but having seen it look so fetching on Mr Sewell, I wondered if it might not be such a bad thing, if mascara and eyeliner became fashionable for men. After all, it didn't do Eddie Izzard any harm:

I'm still shaking my head over that CK1 cologne that came out 15 years ago making men and women smell the same....
I'm a secure dude. Have kissed a good number of men, sat around campfires naked with a good number of men ... BUT, makeup and men is pure crap! |

I'm all for male grooming but I feel there's a fine line between being 'homochic' and 'homoerotic' - wearing mascara definitely being the latter category. Oh that and Korean men carrying big handbags (Think these guys have watched waaaaaaaaay too much tellytubbies).
Big Bird, mascara on Rufus Swell or any other actor you see on screen would look fetching but if you were to meet these guys face to face (in their full mascara-ed glory) would you still think the same???
I dunno...maybe I'm just really old fashioned but for me a guy who, curls and colours/lengthens/thickens his lashes before a night out and shares my eye makeup remover at the end of a night out = Gay bestfriend NOT Boyfriend.... |

Yes, it is such a bad thing. In fact, it's much worse than a bad thing - it's a terrible, horrible ... evil thing. Men had it so good for so long. Lather, rinse (no need to repeat), jeans, t-shirt, hat. Head to local watering hole. Check and mate.
But now we have the metro-sexuals, and suddenly guys are having conversations about the merits of hair gel vs. leave-in-conitioner.
