| I wouldn't go looking around here at all. Prices should be quite bad. You'll actually have a better chance getting something good by looking at on-line auctions of carpets out of Turkey. There's a glut on the market and the auctions are being used to move stock. Prices are good. |

I was hoping to buy a rug I actually see and feel first.
I expect the prices not to be cheap.
Anyone seen any places that sell them? |

There's a place in Itaewon near Rocky Mntn. Tavern (same side of the street). I went in there once, but the prices were nuts- 900,000 won for a rug was the cheapest (or maybe it was 700,000 won). The owners didn't seem very friendly. I might have pissed them off cuz I didn't know to take off my shoes the second I stepped in the door  . Apparently they are hand woven, so I guess that explains the price. They may bargain, though- I didn't try, actually. |

There is a plae in Songtan, south of Suwon on subway line 1, that advertises on http://www.usfkclassifieds.com. Look under the subsection "carpets". I have never been there myself, so I don't know how much they run for or the quality. I hope it helps  |

Unless the rugs are exceptional, those prices are too high, especially at 900,000. You should definitely try to bargain if you go there. Are the owners Korean or foreigners? I wonder how the culture of bargaining would paly out here. To really do it and to work down from exaggerated prices would take hours and might even take days of repeat visits. |

Depends on the quality and the size, but it's not out of line for Korea. The department stores buy/sell in bulk, and it's hard to find anything under 1 million won, with most things you'll like selling for 2, 3 & 4 million and up.
There's also a guy in Itaewon I've done business with. He runs the shop connected to a restaurant, and he's located... on the left (east) side of the main road that runs south across the Banpo Bridge. He's got an amazing stock, though no bargain prices. Many carpets in the 1~3 million won range, then 4~6 million won, some 10~15 million, and one carpet he showed me he's selling for 30 MILLION won (no lie) and on that he won't bargain. (ha ha) But he regularly goes on "road shows" where he loads up a truck and heads down to one of the US army & air force bases around the country, and he sells more in a weekend that way than he sells from his shop in a month. I don't know that the average US military family is especially savvy about persian carpets, but I imagine they know a thing or two, and I know for a fact they can buy from anywhere in the world. They're not going to be cheated so easily, and they're not the captive audience the Koreans are. All of which is to say, this guy can't be doing TOO much price-gouging. His stock is generally good, and his prices reflect that.

| I have NO idea about price, but there is a place in Itaewon taht has a great selection. From the subway, get on the side that has Burger King and Gecko's on it (Not hamilton hotel). Walk away from Burger King and Fire station, toward the Outback. Keep walking quite a way until you get to the big intersection at the end of Itaewon street. Continue around the corner (never cross a street). There is a pakistani restaurant called Alsaba right there on your left. Next door is a persion rug shop. They also have a lot of rugs upstairs, so don't be discouraged by the size of the shop. They also have great food at the restaurant! |

True - rugs large enough to cover a whole floor will demand higher prices. I was thinking more of area rugs. The prices here may also be raised by lack of competition and a sense of what the market will bear.
I'm used to doing my buying in Turkey, specifically in Ankara and areas around there. Just being there brings the price down. My best effort was three hours of bargaining (chatting and tea-drinking) in Hattusas (east of Ankara) to work a $350 rug down to $180. A nice modern piece, partially hali, partially cicim kilim, made with local plant dyes. I was pleased to pay that price in the end and they were pleased to sell for it. Vive the market! |

Great minds think alike! Seriously, Vanislander, if you go there, you should eat there too. They have real long grain rice with spices and stuff in it. You don't realize how good non-korean rice can be until you have the good stuff... |

At the pakistani restaurant? I'll definitely eat there then as I check the rug place out.
I have to go to Itaewon to pick up a tailored suit soon, and as there's an art exhibition about to leave Seoul it seems like the best time this coming weekend to get a bunch of stuff done up there.
Thank you for directions to the rug place. Dangerous to go the day after payday  but so be it. |

| Yeah at the pakistani restaurant. Just remember its Pakistani, not Indian, so the food is a bit different. great rice. great bread (can't remember te name). great chicken makhani. |
