Dang. Quite an interesting read and nice to get a western perspective on this country 350 years ago.

There are a lot of interesting quotes about old timey Korea but I just want to point out these quotes about korean character:

"As concerns loyalty and disloyalty, as well as courage, this nation is much inclined to stealing, lying and cheating. One should not trust them too much. They consider it an act of heroism when they have done harm to someone....
On the other hand, Koreans are good natured and very credulous. We could make them believe anything we wanted. They like strangers.... They have a feminine sensitivity...."

I found this passage interesting.... That one and the section on justice and marriage.

I liked the bits where he mentioned Koreans like to go for picnics and hikes. I can't remember the other things he wrote that sounded like nothing much had changed in 300 years.

The part where adulterous women are buried up to their necks at the edge of town, a saw is put next to them and every passerby has to take a stroke on her neck with the saw is a bit, um, eye-opening.
