I've applied to some schools and some recruiters. Its been possibly over a week now since I started sending out photo and resume. However, I've only heard from around 4 recruiters, and nothing from the schools.
Hoping someone can tell me how long did it take for them to reply and get your job? I'm thinking of calling them up, is it a good idea? |

About 2 days. I sent my resume on a Saturday, and my recruiter called me with a job offer on Monday. It was the perfect job for me, too. Exactly what I was looking for.
I really recommend Planet ESL, they did a great job, and were very helpful with the visa process. (I sound like a darn commercial.) |

| I tried networking with friends and aquaintances, etc. That took 6 months of wasted time... Then I got pissed-off and posted my resume on this site and had about a dozen contacts in 24 hours. One was really serious. It led to this job. That was pretty much nailed down in a week. Benny Lee at eteacherbank will find you a job pretty fast, but you better be ready to go; cause he doesn't fool around. I signed the contract and was on the plane in 2 weeks. |

Many schools post their ad with an application deadline and wait until that deadline to go through the pile of applications and start contacting people. That can be weeks and weeks later. In the meantime, you are left twiddling your thumbs, wondering if they even received your application.
It's OK to contact schools by phone (or in person). It might make you stand out in the crowd.
Be patient and good luck. |

I did a lot of research then wasted a month pis*ing around with the idiots a Footprints who finally told me I was not employable because of my: sex (male), age (then 49) and lack of experience.
I then sent out a couple of resumes/pics. Within 24 hrs. I was hired by my school district when I responded "Yes" to an email asking me if I was "interested" (apparently this is Korean code for a job offer)... LOL... and they sent me a contract. My head was spinning! I've been at the same job for a year and a half now.
Footprints did me a favor... I'm not working in a crap hogwan for wongjongnimbabo. |

I'm not trying to be rude, honestly, but just how picky are you being Ella? I mean, if you've already spent a month in Korea without working, you've already lost at least 2 mil. At a certain point you've gotta take something, right? You must have come across something halfway decent by now... |

It took me a while because the rat b*****d of a Director at Ivy School in YongamDong, Cheongju (actually her husband, they also run the SLP in Cheongju) tried having me blackballed once he heard I was looking for jobs in "HIS" city. He went out of his way, well before I said anything bad about the school, to insure I would be turned down by everyone. Contrary to the letter of reccomendation he wrote when I applied for jobs in other cities I was now a bad teacher, horrible person, etc. He was worried I would tell people, especially old students, how he pulled an 11th hour firing and cheated me out of a lot of money.
The ONLY reason I was able to find a job, and it turned out to be great, is because Mr. Kim lied to my 1st Boss who now does recruiting (Angel Recruiting) and got caught. She made it her mission after that to stop him from screwing me over, and within a week had a job for me at a new school. I have been there almost a year and they are good enough that I will be back for another one. |

I'd agree with this! There maybe is a point when you can read too much crap on Dave's and just get paranoid. There is no perfect job and there comes a point when you have to settle for something decent, that you'll be able to live with for a year. The money is just draining from your pocketbook both in terms of money lost from not working and money lost from having to live here without a job and pay for your own accomodation. |

I used KimnJoe agency in Busan which took 1 month from accepting the position to flying to South Korea. They seem excellent in bringing the 2 parties togethor (you and a school) in getting you on the flight over here and to your school. They seemed to find a good school/
Footprints sucks, (time waster) you go through long phone interviews that you must wait weeks to get and then at the end they tell you it is impossible to get your flight prepaid. Footprints has been offering me tons of jobs in email box now that I am here in Korea. Yes, they did not want to pay my flight and then after I fly here on my employers Won 3 1/2 weeks ago, Footprints is offering me public school jobs starting March 1st that pay 2.4 million Won per month after I told them 2 weeks ago I am not looking anylong and thank you for your time, blah blah blah. I sure am not looking for a job any longer even though I make 400,000 less than these offers. I am committed to my current employer. Besides, there are immigration laws pertaining to work visas. What is Footprints thinking?
ATC and many others will not follow up with your application, but just launch your campaign with ferocity and work long hours at it as to explore many options in a short time period as job offers may come sooner than you are ready to accept one. My best guess is that you want to apply 6 weeks before starting work at a Hagwon, maybe several months for a public school or university job. I applied online 6 weeks before I started and accepted a job 4 weeks before starting in Korea.

The first one took about a month. The second? About five minutes.
Teachers are in demand, especially those of us with, AHEM, good looks.
OP- in Korea, you are hired based on looks. Try to take another photo- maybe one more flattering? It shouldn't make a difference, but it does in Korea. |

I am guessing I got really really lucky...
I finally have all the stuff I need to move out... transcripts are in the mail from my Uni, fresh passport is in my hands, etc. I sent out a few mails to schools and recruiters this morning. Within 2 hours of doing so I had been through 4 telephone interviews. The last one I had offered me a public school job that seems sweet. Not only do I have a job, but I have been told to make sure I am happy with the area and the conditions before I sign anything and that I will recieving a choice of schools in the mail tomorrow!
The interviewer said that there was no need for any further interviews, but he is insisting that I do my research, so that in itself is a good sign (no rushing me to sign anything before I find something I dislike).
It really does seem to be a great opportunity, especially considering I have no teaching cert or experience! If this all works out (I guess it could still fall through) I will be posting a great write-up for this recruiter in the near future |
