Please explain the logic of this to me. Or, maybe if you do, I'll still think its stupid, stupid, stupid. I went into my favourite Dunkin Doughnuts today. I've been using this Happy Points card since Xmas time, and so finally, I think, hey, I want to use the points to pay for my coffee. I tell them that, and they go on the phone to call some number. They said they have to do that whenever someone uses the Happy Points card??? Then, the chief "guy" says to me, "can you please show your foreigner's ID card?"

I was kind of shocked to be asked for an ID card for using a friggin' Happy Points card, which was free, and to which it has been used faithfully almost every day since Christmas. This extra precaution was for omg, a total of $4000 won! Of course, I guess its imperitive to make a call somewhere and ask for an ID card, eh???

right.

To top it off, I'm a real regular there! I was not in a great mood (been through some ups and downs) and its too bad for them since I got kind of choked and said, "I'm going to pay you instead." Then, after paying, I showed them my passport and said, "and I'm not going to use it for a friggin' Happy Points Card. I'm a human being!"

Okay, a little melodramatic, but the point is that back home I can tell you that we NEVER made any foreigners from Korea have to produce an ID card to use a friggin' Happy Points for a cup of coffee. Canada is so human rights oriented that it would be in the friggin newspaper the next day as a racist practice...

which i think it is. I mean, its not like I was opening a bank account. It was a cup of coffee!

grrrrr....

Well, and this is just a guess....

The Alien Registration card is supposed to be used/usable in a similar way to the Korea ID card...they changed the Alien Card numbering system a while ago to make it fit the Korean ID digits...and Koreans use their ID card for a whole lot of things...could it have been simply like showing your license in the US when you cash a check? I mean, if you use a credit card or check to buy a pack of gum, they should check your id...would you still argue that "it's just a pack of gum?"

Totally hear you man. Just be proud that you are from a country that promotes equality, and actually has entered the 21st Century. God, it's sooo embarassing for Korea, but the sad part is, they really have no freaking idea, and probably never will.

Yes, this was an outrage against humanity. Consider hiring a civil rights lawyer and suing the pants off Dunkin Donuts. Anytime you put American corporate economic imperialism together with Korean inefficiency you will get abuses of this magnitude. Hire a lawyer! Don't let them get away with this violation of human rights.

Stop right there Dorothy. You ain't in Kansas anymore.

You're gonna find things extra difficult around here by expecting it to be like back home.

Give a bug eyed Shocked followed by a head shake and a half-smile Neutral then when you think of the absurdity of it give a good ol rippin' Laughing (advice to help one remain well adjusted to living for a year or more in a different country) I mean, Dunkin' friggin' Donuts! How rich is that humourwise. The local cops must've been chatting with the clerks while getting their powder fixes! Ah, the stories we can tell when we return home. count this as one of the joys of travelling: seeing such puzzling differences. Like, having to squat when getting a driver's license. That one still gets me.

Nothing wrong here. He wanted to see your ID and he would ask a Korean person the same - to see their ID. Your foreign alien registration card is your official ID while in Korea.

You would also have to show it when getting discount for movie tickets and in some other places, where for example they would check your date of brith, etc.

Did you really think your ID can only be shown to police and in the bank?

Its really your ID just like driving license is in USA and get used to it.

I had a leg injury, was limping a bit, noticably, so I wasn't asked to, but the guy behind me and everyone ahead of me had to do deep knee bends... absurd except to change tires... but I wasn't asked to do it, because I'm waygook and they have had past experience with resistant foreigners? or maybe simply to help me save face, since I obviously would have trouble given the limp I had that day. Dunno. Not an isolated experience: I'd heard about this practice of asking for squats over a year prior to actually going. Funny eh. Funny odd (to us) if not funny haha. Squatting might be just the symbolic gesture of good physical health to Koreans.

ID to get a friggin cip of coffee!!! George Holy Orwell!!!! I can't believe that some of you people think that the OP's post is unreasonable. ID was invented for serious identification issue. NOT FOR GETTING A COFFEE!! Some of you apologists for Korea really need to give yourselves a shake. (Not to be confused with a chocolate shake which (of course) would require ID.)

My Korean girlfriend has to use her Korean ID every time she wants to use her TTL points card.

You may think it's stupid, but if loads of people abuse the system, it adds up for the company. That's why they ask for ID.

Similarly, back home, SUBWAY restaurants stopped using their free sub cards, because employees were givingf away too many stickers.

Little things add up.

To ask for ID to get points added to a card would be silly and a waste. Especially if you're a regular. But when you want to redeem those points I have no problem checking ID. Just makes sure you're using your own card and not someone else's card.

Deal with it or stop using it.

Could someone tell me what the happy points card is? I have seen the sign at Baskin Robbins, as they are across the street from me and I get random cravings all the time and end up there quite often. I think this might be beneficial to me, and I don't mind showing my registration card Smile Thanks!
